Enhanced Recovery after Surgery

open access: yes, 2023
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are specialized perioperative care guidelines. The protocol was first published in 2005. Since then, it has been associated with improved perioperative outcomes. This multimodal peri-operative protocols standardize the perioperative care to minimize the surgical stress response and post-operative pain ...

Unveiling the heterogeneity and immunotherapy potency of tumor-associated neutrophils in the tumor microenvironment of gastric cancer

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology
Background The differentiation characteristics of neutrophils within the gastric cancer (GC) tumor microenvironment (TME) and their interactions with malignant gastric epithelial cells require further investigation. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential

Smurf2-induced degradation of SMAD2 causes inhibition of hair follicle stem cell differentiation

open access: yesCell Death Discovery, 2022
Hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) are implicated in the formation of hair follicles and epidermis. This study aims to clarify the role of SMAD2 in regulating the differentiation of HFSCs, which is involved with Smurf2.

Targeting EZH2 reverses thyroid cell dedifferentiation and enhances iodide uptake in anaplastic thyroid cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) lacks iodide uptake ability due to MAPK activation increasing the expression of the histone methyltransferase EZH2, which represses thyroid differentiation genes (TDGs) such as the sodium iodide symporter (NIS). Dual inhibition of MAPK (U0126) and EZH2 (EPZ6438/Tazemetostat) reverses this mechanism, thus restoring TDG ...

Pan-cancer profiling of FZD2 as a prognostic biomarker: integrative multi-omics analysis with experimental validation and functional characterization in gastric cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
BackgroundFrizzled class receptor 2 (FZD2), is a critical protein in the Wnt signaling pathway, which plays significant roles in various cancers. However, its role in cancer progression, prognosis, and diagnosis remains largely unexplored.

Patient-reported outcomes 6 months after enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BackgroundEnhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs have been established as perioperative strategies associated with improved outcomes. However, intermediate and long-term patient-reported outcome data for patients undergoing ERAS interventions ...

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Attitudes of surgeons to the use of postoperative markers of the systemic inflammatory response following elective surgery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Cancer is responsible for 7.6 million deaths worldwide and surgery is the primary modality of a curative outcome. Postoperative care is of considerable importance and it is against this backdrop that a questionnaire based study assessing ...

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.

Reduced vascular leakage correlates with breast carcinoma T regulatory cell infiltration but not with metastatic propensity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
A mouse model for vascular normalization and a human breast cancer cohort were studied to understand the relationship between vascular leakage and tumor immune suppression. For this, endothelial and immune cell RNAseq, staining for vascular function, and immune cell profiling were employed.
