Abstract Assessing the extinction risk of species based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List (RL) is key to guiding conservation policies and reducing biodiversity loss. This process is resource demanding, however, and requires continuous updating, which becomes increasingly difficult as new species are added to the RL.

Binding of Hg(I) and Hg(II) Ions to Amyloid-Beta (Aβ) Peptide Variants Affect their Structure and Aggregation. [PDF]

Mercury (Hg) is a possible risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, where neuronal death is related to amyloid brain plaques containing aggregated amyloid‐β (Aβ) peptides. We show that equimolar Hg(I) or Hg(II) ions inhibit normal Aβ aggregation. Hg(II) binds Aβ(1–40) with an apparent binding affinity 28 ± 8 μM.
