Binding of Hg(I) and Hg(II) Ions to Amyloid-Beta (Aβ) Peptide Variants Affect their Structure and Aggregation. [PDF]
ChembiochemMercury (Hg) is a possible risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, where neuronal death is related to amyloid brain plaques containing aggregated amyloid‐β (Aβ) peptides. We show that equimolar Hg(I) or Hg(II) ions inhibit normal Aβ aggregation. Hg(II) binds Aβ(1–40) with an apparent binding affinity 28 ± 8 μM.
