Greenhouse gas formation during the ensiling process of grass and lucerne silage.
Journal of Environmental Management, 2021Silage is an essential global feedstuff and an emitter of greenhouse gases. However, few studies have examined the formation of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) during the ensiling process. This study aimed to record the course

BACKGROUND With the rapid development of animal husbandry, silage trade has increased in frequency. The re-ensiling of materials is often required before or after trading, resulting in the exposure of the silage to air before re-sealing.

Potato vines are a potential feed for cattle if the vines can be preserved. The objectives of this study were primarily to study alternative methods to preserve potato vines by ensiling and determine the effects of soil contamination on ensiling. In experiment 1, vines from four potato varieties were harvested individually with a flail chopper set at

Engineering aspects of ensiling
Biochemical Engineering Journal, 2003Abstract Ensiling is a preservation method for moist forage crops, based on a lactic acid solid-state fermentation. Air is detrimental to silage because it enables the reactivation of detrimental aerobic microorganisms. The present review describes some of the major engineering and physical aspects of ensiling—silo types and the ensiling process—step

Ensiling Agricultural Residues for Bioethanol Production
Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2007The potential of using ensiling, with and without supplemental enzymes, as a cost-effective pretreatment for bioethanol production from agricultural residues was investigated. Ensiling did not significantly affect the lignin content of barley straw, cotton stalk, and triticale hay ensiled without enzyme, but slightly increased the lignin content in ...

Ensiling of sugar kelp biomass for biorefining
Biomass and Bioenergy, 2021Seaweeds are generally harvested at certain seasons to obtain optimal yield and quality for specific purposes. Year-round biorefining of seaweed, therefore, requires storage of the biomass from harvest to processing. We investigated ensiling as a method for preserving seaweed biomass for subsequent biorefinery.

Yeasts and fungi occurring in ensiled whole-crop maize and other ensiled vegetable crops
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1990The yeast flora of whole-crop maize ensiled for two weeks was predominated by Candida holmii, C. lambica, C. milleri, Hansenula anomala and Saccharomyces dairensis. Inoculation with other yeast species reported in the literature to prevail in maize or wheat silages did not alter the yeast flora.
