Culture Medium for Enterobacteria [PDF]
A new minimal medium for enterobacteria has been developed. It supports growth of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium at rates comparable to those of any of the traditional media that have high phosphate concentrations, but each of the macronutrients (phosphate, sulfate, and nitrogen)

Acid stress responses in enterobacteria [PDF]
The enteric microogranisms Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri prefer to grow in neutral pH environments. They nevertheless experience dramatic pH fluctuations in nature and during pathogenesis. In response to environmental encounters with acid, these organisms have evolved complex, inducible acid survival strategies. Regulatory features

Mutagenic DNA repair in enterobacteria [PDF]
Sixteen species of enterobacteria have been screened for mutagenic DNA repair activity. In Escherichia coli, mutagenic DNA repair is encoded by the umuDC operon. Synthesis of UmuD and UmuC proteins is induced as part of the SOS response to DNA damage, and after induction, the UmuD protein undergoes an autocatalytic cleavage to produce the carboxy ...

Transmissible Substrate-utilizing Ability in Enterobacteria [PDF]
Three of 152 strains of Escherichia coli transmitted their ability to utilize sucrose (Sac+) to other strains by conjugation. The transfer factor of one of them and of a Sac+ Salmonella thompson strain was thermosensitive. The raffinose-utilizing ability of 27 of 163 E. coli strains was also transmissible.
