Two Screening Assays to Detect Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus spp.

open access: yesMicrobiology Research, 2022
Enterococci have become major nosocomial pathogens. An increasing number of these infections are as a result of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Accurate detection of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) is important, so that appropriate therapy and ...

Balanced Expression of the Diiron Oxygenase BioE Is Essential for Biotin Homeostasis in Elizabethkingia meningoseptica

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
BioE is a new diiron oxygenase that catalyzes the conversion of long‐chain acyl groups into pimeloyl thioester, initiating biotin synthesis. The overexpression of EmBioE disrupts lipid metabolic homeostasis, requiring repressor BioL to maintain a balance between long‐chain fatty acids and biotin synthesis.

Identification and biotechnological characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from chickpea sourdough in northwestern Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Chickpea, a relevant legume worldwide, can be nutritional and functionally improved by fermentation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB). In order to select suitable autochthonous starter cultures, we isolated and identified LAB from kabuli chickpeas ...

Enterococcus spp.: Is It a Bad Choice for a Good Use—A Conundrum to Solve?

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Since antiquity, the ubiquitous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Enterococci, which are just as predominant in both human and animal intestinal commensal flora, have been used (and still are) as probiotics in food and feed production. Their qualities encounter

Comparison Of Biofilm-Producing Enterococcus Faecalis, Enterococcus Faecium, And Unusual Enterococcus Strains

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biological Research, 2017
The present study focused on determining the prevalence of biofilm-forming ability in Enterococcus faecalis, E. faecium, and unusual Enterococcus clinical isolates, and comparison of resistance and the prevalence of selected virulence factors among biofilm-positive strains. The ability to form biofilm was detected in 13.3% of E.

Enterococcus raffinosus sp. nov., Enterococcus solitarius sp. nov. and Enterococcus pseudoavium sp. nov. [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1989
Deoxyribonucleic acid base composition, deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization, and biochemical studies were performed on some enterococci from clinical sources of uncertain taxonomic position. Our results indicate that 6 human strains, a single clinical isolate and a strain from bovine mastitis are genetically distinct from each ...

Controlled functional expression of the bacteriocins pediocin PA-1 and bactofencin A in Escherichia coli [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
peer-reviewedThe bacteriocins bactofencin A (class IId) and pediocin PA-1 (class IIa) are encoded by operons with a similarly clustered gene organization including a structural peptide, an immunity protein, an ABC transporter and accessory bacteriocin ...

Fermented Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei Cultures Ameliorate Colitis by Modulating Microbiota‐Derived Tryptophan Metabolism and Macrophage Polarization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A solid‐state fermented probiotic (PYW) is developed using wheat bran as substrate, containing high viable Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and bioactive metabolites. PYW alleviates intestinal inflammation by gut microbiota composition, enriching indole derivatives, activating aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling, and regulating macrophage polarization. PYW
