ABSTRACT Aims/Hypothesis Glucose‐dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) is a bidirectional glucose‐stabilising hormone potentiating insulin secretion at high glucose levels and glucagon secretion during normal‐to‐low plasma glucose levels. Preclinically, GIP and the amino acid alanine show synergistic glucagonotropic effects at low glucose levels ...

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone secreted from enteroendocrine cells that can promote weight loss and blood glucose improvement. We screened probiotic strains that effectively stimulate GLP-1 secretion from human enteroendocrine cells and ...

ABSTRACT Aim Oxytocin has been proposed to exert glucose‐stabilising effects via modulation of pancreatic hormone secretion and to play a role in bone homeostasis. However, human data under controlled conditions are limited. We investigated the effects of intravenously infused oxytocin during a graded glucose infusion on glucose‐regulating hormones and

Enterochromaffin 5-HT cells – A major target for GLP-1 and gut microbial metabolites
Objectives: 5-HT storing enterochromaffin (EC) cells are believed to respond to nutrient and gut microbial components, and 5-HT receptor-expressing afferent vagal neurons have been described to be the major sensors of nutrients in the GI-tract.

ABSTRACT Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) complicates roughly one in seven pregnancies and predicts later maternal type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Yet its pharmacological management still rests on a handful of agents (insulin, metformin and glibenclamide), none of them selected on the basis of the disease's molecular genetics.

Enteroendocrine L cells function as chemosensors in the intestine. Using the L‐cell line GLUTag, we show that distinct nutrients trigger different combinations of co‐secretion of GLP‐1 and neurotransmitters: D‐glucose evokes GLP‐1, glutamate, and ATP; L‐glutamine evokes GLP‐1 and glutamate; sucralose and butyrate evoke only GLP‐1.

Enteroendocrine cell differentiation: Implications for human disease
Enteroendocrine cells are the most abundant hormone producing cells in humans. Though they make up less than 1 % of the gastrointestinal epithelium, these cells have a large physiological impact through the secretion of hormones that act both locally and systemically to regulate intestinal function and whole-body metabolism, among other functions.

ABSTRACT Background Electroacupuncture (EA) reshapes intestinal flora; whether post‐EA fecal microbiota transplantation (post‐EA FMT) regulates gastrointestinal hormones via the gut microbiota–bile acid (BA) pathway remains unclear. Methods Sham EA (SEA) served as control. Gastrointestinal hormones/motility were assessed post‐EA.
