THE EARLIER LITERATURE Enterostomy was recommended by Fuhr and Wesener in 1886 as a useful measure in the treatment for intestinal obstruction. For cases in which the obstruction was not readily relieved or the patient's condition did not permit an extensive operative procedure, its use was advised for temporary relief.
