Predication of entropy generation rate in a concentrating photovoltaic thermal system with twisted tube turbulator using Boosted regression tree algorithm

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
Efficient energy conversion and utilization remain paramount in addressing the growing energy demand and environmental concerns. Concentrating photovoltaic thermal (CPVT) systems have emerged as promising solutions by integrating photovoltaic (PV) cells ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

How biased are maximum entropy models? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Maximum entropy models have become popular statistical models in neuroscience and other areas in biology, and can be useful tools for obtaining estimates of mutual information in biological systems.

Entropy Generation Analysis of Microchannel Heat

open access: yes, 2009
Analytical solutions for entropy generation rate distribution associated with heat transfer and fluid friction in microchannel heat sinks are examined. Microchannel heat sinks are modeled as a porous medium through which fluid flows. Analytical solutions

A Study on the Evolution Laws of Entrainment Performances Using Different Mixer Structures of Ejectors

open access: yesEntropy
Being the core of the ejector refrigeration system, an ejector with a suitable mixer, conical–cylindrical or cylindrical, is key to high-energy-efficiency and low-carbon systems.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Maximum entropy generation rate in a heat exchanger at constant inlet parameters

open access: yes, 2017
The main goal of the paper is to provide a condition for which a maximum entropy generation occurs in a heat exchanger at constant inlet parameters (temperatures and mass flow rates).

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.
