Reserves, Injury Severity, and Outcomes in Traumatic Brain Injury: A CENTER‐TBI Observational Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Reserve refers to the brain's ability to maintain function after an injury and strongly relates to traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes. This study examined (1) whether associations between pre‐injury reserve proxies and outcomes differed across injury severity categories, and (2) whether the impact of injury severity varied across ...

Mycophenolate Mofetil Treatment Reduces the Risk of Treatment Escalation Due to Vascular Complications in Limited Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis: Emulation of a Target Trial From the Italian Rheumatology Society SPRING Registry

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) use in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) is relatively uncommon because of the lower fibrotic burden and the predominance of vascular complications. In vitro observations and clinical data from transplanted patients suggest a protective effect of MMF on endothelial function.

Entropy generation rate during laser pulse heating: Effect of laser pulse parameters on entropy generation rate

Optics and Lasers in Engineering, 2008
Laser pulse heating of solid surface and entropy generation during the heating process are considered. Time exponentially decaying pulse is accommodated in the analysis and the laser pulse parameter (β1/β2) resulting in minimum entropy generation rate is computed. Analytical solutions for temperature rise are presented and volumetric entropy generation

Determination of LEDs degradation with entropy generation rate

Journal of Applied Physics, 2017
We propose a method to assess the degradation and aging of light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on irreversible entropy generation rate. We degraded several LEDs and monitored their entropy generation rate (Ṡ) in accelerated tests. We compared the thermoelectrical results with the optical light emission evolution during degradation.

The Measurement and Prediction of Boundary Layer Entropy Generation Rate

Fluids Engineering, 2003
In this paper hot wire measurements of the boundary layer velocity profiles at discrete locations along the suction surface of a turbine blade profile are presented. The measured aerodynamic data is transformed into thermodynamic data by way of the entropy function for the investigated Reynolds numbers of 76,000, 120,000 and 185,000 based on inlet ...

Flow-Induced Endothelial Surface Reorganization and Minimization of Entropy Generation Rate

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2004
Effects of hydrodynamic shear on the shape of the endothelial surface are examined based on evaluations of the rate of entropy generation at the cell surface. A linear solution of the flow over a sinusoidally varying endothelial surface is used to evaluate the entropy generation rate on the cell surface for which measured cell dimensions are available.

On the Assessment of Mechanical Degradation of Grease Using Entropy Generation Rate

Tribology Letters, 2019
A methodology for continuous monitoring of grease degradation subjected to mechanical shearing is proposed. It is hypothesized that the mechanical degradation of grease is akin to the running-in process in a tribo-pair with both transient and steady-state regimes.

A detailed analysis in thoracic aorta by means of the entropy generation rate: Prediction of the atherosclerotic lesion

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, 2022
A detailed numerical analysis is carried out in a real human thoracic aorta by means of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the prediction of the atherosclerosis lesion. Common hemodynamics parameters, such as, the oscillatory shear index (OSI) and the time average wall shear stress (TAWSS) are used for the prediction of the atherosclerosis ...

Comparison of Entropy Generation Rate Calculation Methods for Engineering Applications

43rd AIAA Thermophysics Conference, 2012
Physics-based modeling and simulation requires proper formulation of the fundamental equations for numerical solution in order to best-represent the physical system being modeled. A standard engineering method to calculate the entropy generation rate is to assume steady flow and then use the steady entropy balance equation.
