Entropy Generation Analysis of Human Thermal Stress Responses [PDF]

open access: yesISRN Thermodynamics, 2012
The present study involves application of an open system entropy generation formulation to analyze human thermal stress responses. The time-series human thermal stress response data are obtained by conducting a simulation using a validated finite-element human thermal model (FEHTM).

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

The thermodynamics of optical étendue

open access: yes, 2008
The concept of ´etendue is applied to the propagation of luminescent radiation, and to the transformation of such radiation in absorbing and luminescent media.

Thermodynamic efficiency and entropy production in the climate system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present an outlook on the climate system thermodynamics. First, we construct an equivalent Carnot engine with efficiency and frame the Lorenz energy cycle in a macroscale thermodynamic context.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

A Statistical Mechanical Load Balancer for the Web

open access: yes, 2005
The maximum entropy principle from statistical mechanics states that a closed system attains an equilibrium distribution that maximizes its entropy. We first show that for graphs with fixed number of edges one can define a stochastic edge dynamic that ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Analysis of Entropy Generation in Flow of Methanol-Based Nanofluid in a Sinusoidal Wavy Channel

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
The entropy generation due to heat transfer and fluid friction in mixed convective peristaltic flow of methanol-Al2O3 nano fluid is examined. Maxwell’s thermal conductivity model is used in analysis.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Entropy generation analysis in an evaporative air-cooled heat exchanger

open access: yesJournal of Thermal Science and Technology, 2014
In the present study, air-side entropy generation rate for an evaporative air-cooled heat exchanger has been investigated using thermodynamic second-law analysis.
