Entropy Production and the Maximum Entropy of the Universe [PDF]

open access: yesThe 5th International Electronic Conference on Entropy and Its Applications, 2019
The entropy of the observable universe has been calculated as Suni ~ 10104 k and is dominated by the entropy of supermassive black holes. Irreversible processes in the universe can only happen if there is an entropy gap ΔS between the entropy of the observable universe Suni and its maximum entropy Smax: ΔS = Smax − Suni.

Generalization of Prigogine’s theorem for the case of full differential of entropy

open access: yesMethodsX, 2018
In this paper we propose a solution to the problem associated with the presence of an incomplete differential of entropy in Prigogine's theorem on the minimum of entropy production.

Entropy and Entropy Production in Multiscale Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics, 2019
Abstract Heat conduction is investigated on three levels: equilibrium, Fourier, and Cattaneo. The Fourier level is either the point of departure for investigating the approach to equilibrium or the final stage in the investigation of the approach from the Cattaneo level.

Entropy Production Rates of the Climate [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2020
AbstractThere is ongoing interest in the global entropy production rate as a climate diagnostic and predictor, but progress has been limited by ambiguities in its definition; different conceptual boundaries of the climate system give rise to different internal production rates.

Wigner Entropy Production Rate [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2017
The characterization of irreversibility in general quantum processes is an open problem of increasing technological relevance. Yet, the tools currently available to this aim are mostly limited to the assessment of dynamics induced by equilibrium environments, a situation that often does not match the reality of experiments at the microscopic and ...

Entropy production in affine inflation [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review D, 2020
Multiple scalar fields nonminimally interacting through pure affine gravity are considered to generate primordial perturbations during an inflationary phase. The couplings considered give rise to two distinct sources of entropy perturbations that may not be suppressed in the long wavelength limit.

Entropy production and lost work for irreversible processes

open access: yes, 2006
In this paper we analyse in depth the Lost Work in an irreversible process (i.e. IRREV REV Lost ) W =W -W . This quantity is also called ‘degraded energy’ or ‘Energy unavailable to do work’. Usually in textbooks one can find the relation Lost U W o TDS .

Entropy production and the climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The entropy production rate of the climate is a topic of active study but ongoing confusion, spurred by the yet-unproven hypothesis that the climate system might be organising itself to maximise its entropy production rate and, more broadly, the ...

Bacterial chemotaxis and entropy production [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2010
Entropy production is calculated for bacterial chemotaxis in the case of a migrating band of bacteria in a capillary tube. It is found that the speed of the migrating band is a decreasing function of the starting concentration of the metabolizable attractant.
