Hazard assessment of nanomaterials: how to meet the requirements for (next generation) risk assessment

open access: yesParticle and Fibre Toxicology
Background Hazard and risk assessment of nanomaterials (NMs) face challenges due to, among others, the numerous existing nanoforms, discordant data and conflicting results found in the literature, and specific challenges in the application of strategies ...

Coupling Scattering Characteristic Analysis of Dihedral Corner Reflectors in SAR Images

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
The scattering mechanisms of dihedral corner reflectors have attracted great attention in the past decades. However, the scattering centers of dihedral corners are not discussed systematically.

The Role of Economic Analysis in Shaping Environmental Policy [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The experience of the US in using economic analysis to develop environmental policy is examined. Regulatory actions needed to create environmental benefits often impose substantial costs--both direct costs and indirect effects on other social goals--so ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Heme Oxygenase Activity Correlates with Serum Indices of Iron Homeostasis in Healthy Nonsmokers

open access: yesBiomarker Insights, 2016
Heme oxygenase (HO) catalyzes the breakdown of heme to carbon monoxide, iron, and biliverdin. While the use of genetically altered animal models in investigation has established distinct associations between HO activity and systemic iron availability ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

A Novel Efficient WLP-Based BOR FDTD Method With Explicit Treating Ideology

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
In this paper, we proposed a novel efficient weighted Laguerre polynomial (WLP)-based finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with explicit treating ideology, which is extremely useful for problems with very fine structures in the body of revolution (

Microclimate variations between semienclosed and open sections of a marathon route [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon, held annually, is one of the most popular international marathon events. Its primarily urban environmental setting characterized by high-density urban areas, semienclosed tunnels, and suspension bridges ...
