Interactions between variation in candidate genes and environmental factors in the etiology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder : a systematic review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD) are complex and multidimensional disorders with high heritability rates. The contribution of genetic factors to the etiology of these disorders is increasingly being recognized as the action of multiple risk ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Drought-tolerant rhizobacterial consortia with diverse plant growth promoting traits enhance wheat and faba bean growth under water and low-P availability promising multi-traits

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Background Staple crops like wheat and faba bean are increasingly subjected to multiple and simultaneous stresses, resulting in substantial yield reduction.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Responses of a native plant species from invaded and uninvaded areas to allelopathic effects of an invader

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Invaders exert new selection pressures on the resident species, for example, through competition for resources or by using novel weapons. It has been shown that novel weapons aid invasion but it is unclear whether native species co‐occurring with ...

Virus-induced Gene Silencing (VIGS) in Barley Seedling Leaves

open access: yesBio-Protocol, 2015
Virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) is one of the most potent reverse genetics technologies for gene functional characterisation. This method exploits a dsRNA-mediated antiviral defence mechanism in plants.

Maternal immune activation and strain specific interactions in the development of autism-like behaviors in mice. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
It is becoming increasingly apparent that the causes of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are due to both genetic and environmental factors. Animal studies provide important translational models for elucidating specific genetic or environmental factors ...
