Towards a coherent philosophy for environmental modelling. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The predominant philosophy underlying most environmental modelling is a form of pragmatic realism. The limitations of this approach in practical applications are discussed, in particular, in relation to questions of scale, nonlinearity, and uniqueness of

Methodological approach for the assessment of environmental effects of agroforestry at the landscape scale. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Silvoarable agroforestry, the deliberate combined use of trees and arable crops on the same area of land, has been proposed in order to improve the environmental performance of agricultural systems in Europe.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Parameter Redundancy with Applications in Statistical Ecology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis is concerned with parameter redundancy in statistical ecology models. If it is not possible to estimate all the parameters, a model is termed parameter redundant.

Photovoltaic module performance: Modeling, parameter estimation, and environmental effects

open access: yese-Prime: Advances in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Energy
This research addresses the pressing need for clean energy solutions by focusing on the increasing adoption of photovoltaic (PV) modules as alternatives to fossil fuel-based energy sources. Despite their promise, PV modules face challenges in maintaining

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Evaluation of environmental heat stress on physiological parameters [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering, 2017
Thermal component of the atmospheric environment is an important issue which is related to human's health. Thermal environment includes both heat exchange conditions (stress) and the physiological response (strain). The aim of this study was to measure the association of heat indices (PSI, HSI, Humidex) especially subjective one (STI) with some ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Optimization of Fuzzy Social Force Model Adaptive Parameter using Genetic Algorithm for Mobile Robot Navigation Control

open access: yesJurnal Rekayasa Elektrika, 2023
The Social Force Model (SFM) is a popular navigation technique for mobile robots that is primarily used to simulate pedestrian movement. The SFM method's drawback is that several parameter values, such as gain, k, and impact range, σ, must be determined ...

Environmental Parameters as Indicators of Bear Welfare

open access: yesZoo Biology
ABSTRACTBears are commonly displayed in zoos worldwide. Historically, bears have been housed in poor conditions and even now can be found in inhumane bear pits despite an increased knowledge of animal welfare and husbandry practices. In many developing countries, regular and comprehensive welfare assessments are rarely conducted, especially if not ...
