Isotopes in hydrology and hydrogeology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The structure, status, and processes of the groundwater system, which can only be acquired through scientific research efforts, are critical aspects of water resource management. Isotope hydrology and hydrogeology is a genuinely interdisciplinary science.

Preparation and characterization of renal cell peptides from fetal rats for their antitumor activity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study aimed to prepare renal cells (RCs) from fetal rats which were digested by enzymes. Candidate peptides RCPs were characterized by capillary HPLC and MS and their bioactivity was predicted using peptideranker. The predicted top 10 bioactive peptides were synthesized.

An optimized protocol to detect high‐throughput DNA methylation from custom targeted sequences on 96 samples simultaneously

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Workflow of a high‐throughput technology for epigenotyping of differentially methylated CpGs in specific regions of the genome. The protocol works with small amounts of DNA extracted from blood or semen. The protocol consists of both enzymatic conversion of unmethylated cytosines and capture by hybridization with a custom panel.

Quantifying the roles of climate, herbivory, topography, and vegetation on tree establishment in the treeline ecotone

open access: yesEcosphere
The transition zone between the upper forest boundary and the treeless alpine vegetation (i.e., the treeline ecotone) is expected to shift upward in elevation with global warming. Multiple factors in addition to climate are influencing tree establishment,

Clustering simulated snow profiles to form avalanche forecast regions [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development
This study presents a statistical clustering method that allows avalanche forecasters to explore patterns in simulated snow profiles. The method uses fuzzy analysis clustering to group small regions into larger forecast regions by considering snow ...

Teaching Python with team‐based learning: using cloud‐based notebooks for interactive coding education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel approach to teaching Python and bioinformatics using team‐based learning and cloud‐hosted notebooks. By integrating interactive coding into biomedical education, the method improves accessibility, student engagement, and confidence—especially for those without a computing background.

Knowledge gaps on drivers of change in East African dry forests: insights from a systematic literature review

open access: yesEcological Processes
Dry forests, on which millions of the world’s impoverished individuals rely, are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Understanding the drivers of change affecting the dynamics of dry forests, the ecosystem services (ES) they provide, and the ...

Establishment and optimization of the two‐step induction system for generating primordial germ cell‐like cells from chicken embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study optimizes a two‐step induction system to generate PGCLCs from chicken ESCs. The induced cells express germline markers and migrate to gonads in ovo, offering a novel approach for avian genetic resource conservation. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the progenitor cells of sperm and eggs.

Managing inequality: the political ecology of a small-scale fishery, Mweru-Luapula, Zambia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper starts from the perspective on resource management approaches as based upon a body of environmental knowledge. By analysing fisheries management in Mweru-Luapula, Zambia, we argue that this body of environmental knowledge has (i) remained ...
