Non-haemagglutinating fimbriae of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC)

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie und Hygiene. Series A: Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Virology, Parasitology, 1986
Two hundred and thirteen Escherichia coli strains originating in 12 countries were included in the study. Of these, 157 were classical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) serotypes, 54 belonged to O138, O139 and O141 serogroups i.e. porcine edema disease strains and two strains were of serogroup O157 associated with haemorrhagic colitis.

Flagella: multipurpose structures in EPEC

Trends in Microbiology, 2002
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is the most important cause of infant diarrhea in the developing world. The hallmarks of EPEC infection are the formation of attaching and effacing (AE) lesions on intestinal epithelial cells (in these lesions the cytoskeleton is rearranged, the microvilli are effaced, and there is the formation of pedestal-like ...

Role of type 1 fimbriae in EPEC infections

Microbial Pathogenesis, 1997
Several fimbriae have been implicated as potentially important in EPEC adhesion and pathogenesis. EPEC strain E2348/69 produced only bundle forming pili and type 1 fimbriae, and did not produce other accesory adhesins identified in EPEC strain B171. Cloning and mutagenesis of these EPEC fim genes indicated that type 1 pili had no affect on levels or ...

Subversion of actin dynamics by EPEC and EHEC

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2006
During the course of infection, enteropathogenic and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EPEC and EHEC, respectively) subvert the host cell signalling machinery and hijack the actin cytoskeleton to tighten their interaction with the gut epithelium, while avoiding phagocytosis by professional phagocytes.

Supermolecular structure of the EPEC TTSS

Trends in Microbiology, 2001
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a major cause of diarrhea in young children. EPEC and its related pathogens use a unique virulence mechanism known as attaching and effacing (A/E), which involves the intimate attachment of bacteria to the epithelial surface and the effacement of host cell microvilli.
