Epenthesis and syllable weight
Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, 1995A standard assumption in the moraic theory of syllable weight is that a syllable must contain at least one mora, which is usually associated with a vowel. This paper presents arguments and evidence against this assumption. The evidence is drawn primarily from the behavior of epenthetic syllables in Mohawk and Iraqi Arabic with brief reference to ...

Abstract Modern Hindi words such as [dãt] ‘tooth’ and [t ∫ãnd] ‘moon’ had similar phonetic structure in Middle Indo-Aryan, with conventional transliterations of danta and čanda, respectively. The development of the long nasal vowel is usually correlated with loss of the nasal consonant.

This paper develops an analysis of epenthesis as a universal syllable-based process in which syllable boundaries arise through the application of markedness constraints on consonant sequences at the level of lexical representation. The purpose of the analysis is to show that, universally, epenthesis occurs in order to create nuclear material for ...

L'A. propose une analyse detaillee d'un processus unique d'epenthese en huariapano (ou pano): l'insertion systematique d'une fricative glottale h en position finale de syllabe. Il suggere que la structure metrique joue un role-cle dans l'explication de la motivation prosodique de la distribution inhabituelle des h epenthetiques dans cette ...

A prosodic theory of epenthesis
Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, 1989This paper argues for a theory in which epenthesis results from the interrelated requirements of prosody and not from obligatory skeletal insertion rules. Prosodic Licensing requires the incorporation of unsyllabified melodies into higher prosodic structure; syllabification conditions determine the particular insertion site; and contrasting epenthesis ...

Vowel epenthesis has been most adequately described using nonlinear phonology approaches. It has been shown that vowel insertion is predictable from the syllabic constraints imposed in a specific language. Halle and Vergnaud (1978) considered vowel epenthesis, as a rule, applied to fill empty nodes created in derivation.
