Do postoperative infectious complications really affect long‐term survival in colorectal cancer surgery? A multicenter retrospective cohort study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 110-120, January 2023., 2023
This multicenter retrospective cohort study suggested that postoperative infection (PI) after curative colorectal surgery (CRC) is associated with impaired oncological outcomes. Strategies to prevent PI and implement appropriate postoperative treatment may improve the quality of care and oncological outcomes in patients undergoing curative CRC surgery.

Mitochondrial DNA disorders in neuromuscular diseases in diverse populations

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Abstract Neuromuscular features are common in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) disorders. The genetic architecture of mtDNA disorders in diverse populations is poorly understood. We analysed mtDNA variants from whole‐exome sequencing data in neuromuscular patients from South Africa, Brazil, India, Turkey and Zambia. In 998 individuals, there were two definite

Congruity of genomic and epidemiological data in modeling of local cholera outbreaks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Cholera continues to be a global health threat. Understanding how cholera spreads between locations is fundamental to the rational, evidence-based design of intervention and control efforts. Traditionally, cholera transmission models have utilized cholera case count data.

High‐Fat and Low‐Carbohydrate Dietary Environments Are Linked to Reduced Idiopathic Epilepsy Incidence and Prevalence

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dietary manipulations like ketogenic diets are established interventions for recalcitrant epilepsy. However, it remains unknown whether specific macronutrient exposure through dietary environments could possibly extend to primary preventive qualities, associated with changes in epilepsy disease burden (prevalence and incidence).

Hypothesis Testing for Detecting Outlier Evaluators [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
In epidemiological studies, very often, evaluators obtain measurements of disease outcomes for study participants. In this paper, we propose a two-stage procedure for detecting outlier evaluators. In the first stage, a regression model is fitted to obtain the evaluators' effects.

Feasibility of Using Subject-Collected Dust Samples in Epidemiologic and Clinical Studies of Indoor Allergens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Studies of indoor allergen exposures are often limited by the cost and logistics of sending technicians to homes to collect dust. In this study we evaluated the feasibility of having subjects collect their own dust samples. The objectives were to compare
