Synthesis of Very-Long-Chain Fatty Acids in the Epidermis Controls Plant Organ Growth by Restricting Cell Proliferation

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2013
The synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in the epidermis is essential for the proper control of cell growth in Arabidopsis. VLCFAs act via their ability to suppress cytokinin synthesis in the vasculature, thus preventing cell ...

Naked cuticle is essential for Drosophila wing development beyond Wingless signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Naked cuticle (Nkd), a Wnt signaling inhibitor, assumes extensive roles in Drosophila wing development. Overexpressing Nkd causes smaller, crumpled wings, while also perturbing multiple signaling pathways and developmental genes. A specific region (R1S) is critical for Nkd's function as a signaling integrator, offering new insights for studying its ...

Characterisation of Embryonic Dermal Precursor Cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Skin is an attractive organ for the acquisition of stem cells due to its accessibility, size and potential for autologous transplants. Research into skin development has implications for the isolation of stem cell populations, for example skin-derived ...

Visualisation of tissue kallikrein, kininogen and kinin receptors in human skin following trauma and in dermal diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
During dermal injury and inflammation the serine proteases kallikreins cleave endogenous, multifunctional substrates (kininogens) to form bradykinin and kallidin.

Engineering tandem VHHs to target different epitopes to enhance antibody‐dependent cell‐mediated cytotoxicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tandem VHH targeting distinct EGFR epitopes were engineered into a monovalent bispecific antibody (7D12‐EGA1‐Fc) with more potent ADCC without increasing affinity to EGFR. Structural modeling of 7D12‐EGA1‐Fc showed cross‐linking of separate EGFR domains to enhance CD16a engagement on NK cells.

Chemerin Is an Antimicrobial Agent in Human Epidermis

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Chemerin, a chemoattractant ligand for chemokine-like receptor 1 (CMKLR1) is predicted to share similar tertiary structure with antibacterial cathelicidins. Recombinant chemerin has antimicrobial activity.
