Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Conservation laws and invariant solutions of the non-linear governing equations associated with a thermodynamic model of a rotating detonation engines with Korobeinikov׳s chemical source term [PDF]
Abstract The non-linear governing gas dynamics equations that are used as a descriptor of a rotating detonation engine are investigated from the group theoretical standpoint. The equations incorporate approximation of Korobeinikov׳s chemical reaction model that are used to describe the two-dimensional detonation field on a surface of a two ...

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Second law of thermodynamics and the failure of rock materials [PDF]
The relation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics to some failure and fracture theories of rock mechanics is investigated. The basic concepts are given to connect failure to the properties of material equations describing the elastic properties.

Thermodynamics of Active Matter: Tracking Dissipation across Scales
The concept of entropy has been pivotal in the formulation of thermodynamics. For systems driven away from thermal equilibrium, a comparable role is played by entropy production and dissipation.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

A thermodynamic conundrum through the ages
Recently, in a series of three papers, Tolley, Woodfield, and Hansen analyzed six types of spontaneous ideal processes where Q=W=0 and for which ΔU and ΔS are also zero.
