Advancing Research on Biomaterials and Biological Materials with Scanning Electron Microscopy under Environmental and Low Vacuum Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is discussed as a powerful extension of conventional SEM for life sciences. By combining high‐resolution imaging with variable pressure and humidity, ESEM allows the analysis of untreated biological materials, supports in situ monitoring of hydration‐driven changes, and advances the functional ...

Equilibrium moisture content of wood at different temperature/moisture conditions in the cladding of wooden constructions and in the relation to their reliability and service life

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2010
One of the natural properties of wood and wood-based materials is their soaking capacity (hygroscopicity). The moisture content of wood and building constructions of wood and wood based materials significantly influences the service life and ...

Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Desorption isotherms of flaxseeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) and thermodynamic parameters of the process

open access: yesRevista Ciência Agronômica, 2020
Sorption isotherms of flaxseeds were determined by static gravimetric method at temperatures 40, 60, and 80 ºC, over a relative moisture range of 10-95%. Six mathematical models were applied to analyze the experimental data. The modified GAB model showed

Characterization of a Recyclate‐Based MgO‐Steel Composite As‐Sintered Inert Anode Candidate After Exposure to Cryolite Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon‐free inert anodes are essential for decarbonizing aluminum electrolysis. This study investigates a recyclate‐based MgO‐316L steel composite anode tested under galvanostatic Hall–Héroult conditions in cryolite at 1000°C. Microstructural analysis reveals selective MgO fluorination, spinel and oxide layer formation, electrolyte infiltration, and ...

Equilibrium moisture content and heat of desorption of garlic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Desorption isotherms for 1 mm thick garlic slices were determined by a static gravimetric method at temperatures between 5 and 45ºC, in the relative humidity range from 11 to 98%.

Thermal expansion of wood at different equilibrium moisture contents [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wood Science, 2019
The measurement of wood thermal expansion at fixed values of moisture content (MC) between the dry state and the cell wall saturation point is a very difficult task, as MC varies with temperature. Being hygroscopic deformations much larger than thermal ones, in order to evaluate the latter, when changing temperature also relative humidity should be ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Pine wood modification by heat treatment in air [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) wood has low dimensional stability and durability. Heat treatment was made in an oven using hot air during 2 to 24 h and at 170-200 ºC. A comparison was made against steam heat treatment.
