Characterization of erbium doped fibers
2009In this thesis the theory of operation of single-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers pumped at 980 nm is described. Details of the derivation of the general rate equation for the propagation of signal, pump, and amplified spontaneous emission are provided. Based on this equation, and McCumber's theory of phonon-terminated optical masers, two closed form

Nonlinearities in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers
Optical Amplifiers and their Applications, 1999In recent years, cross talk induced by the nonlinear properties of optical fibers has been recognized as an important limiting factor in the performance of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems.

A global design of an erbium-doped fiber and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier
Optics & Laser Technology, 2004Abstract A global design of an erbium-doped fiber and an open-loop erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in a steady-state operation is discussed by applying genetic algorithms. Taking a signal gain and a bandwidth as objective functions, 7 parameters of the EDFA (erbium concentration, core radius, erbium-doped radius, refractive index difference ...

A Distributed Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier
Optical Fiber Communication, 1990To date erbium amplifiers have been based on fiber doped with 10 to 1000 ppm erbium oxide, providing several tens of dB gain in lengths of 100 m or less.[1–4] However, communications systems which use such high gain, "lumped" amplifiers subject the signal to large excursions in amplitude, which can cause significant interchannel interference in a ...

Erbium-doped-fiber optical limiting amplifiers
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1995A novel configuration of an erbium-doped-fiber optical output-limiting amplifier (OLA) is presented which is realized by simply introducing a differential lump-loss between the signal and the pump power at a particular point along the fiber. The OLA exhibits an input-power dynamic range in excess of 40 dB and the capacity to control optically the level

Erbium-doped mid-infrared fiber lasers
Laser Technology for Defense and Security XV, 2019The performance of mid-infrared fiber lasers operating on the 3.5 μm transition in erbium has improved significantly since the first demonstration that dual wavelength pumping allowed efficient operation. In this contribution, we will discuss the progress of fiber lasers that operate on this transition with an emphasis on advances towards short pulse ...

Erbium-doped Photonic Crystal Fiber
2009Abstract : This report results from a contract tasking Crystal Fibre A/S as follows: TASK 1: Crystal Fibre will conduct research and development of large mode area, dual clad Er-doped photonic crystal fiber with the design and specifications to be provided by the HQ USAFA/DFP. The intention is to do one fiber type in both a passive and active (Er-doped)

L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference. Technical Digest Postconference Edition. Trends in Optics and Photonics Vol.37 (IEEE Cat. No. 00CH37079), 2002WDM systems are being planned that will use the long-wavelength (L-band) or extended (E-Band) band of the erbium-doped fiber in coordination with the conventional band (C-band). Appending the L-band will ultimately double the available transmission bandwidth and reduce impairments due to nonlinearities in the fiber plant.
