Simplified Sample Preparation for HPLC Analysis of Ergovaline in Tall Fescue
Crop Science, 1993Increased interest in the endophytic fungus, Acremonium coenophialum Morgan‐Jones & Gams, and its symbiotic inhabitance of tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb., has created the need for rapid and reliable ergovaline analysis in research and in extension service (for diagnosis).

Ergovaline and Ergot Alkaloid Concentrations Change in Conserved Tall Fescue
Forage & Grazinglands, 2011Ergot alkaloids are toxins in tall fescue that cause severe reductions in animal gain, reproduction, and milk production. This study was conducted over a 2‐year period to determine the change in concentrations of ergovaline and total ergot alkaloids in tall fescue as it is conserved as silage, hay, and ammoniated hay.

Bioaccumulation of ergovaline in bovine lateral saphenous veins in vitro.
Journal of animal science, 2009Ergot alkaloids have been associated with vasoconstriction in grazing livestock affected by the fescue toxicosis syndrome. Previous in vitro investigations studying how ergot alkaloids caused vasoconstriction have shown that ergovaline has a distinct receptor affinity and sustained contractile response. A similar contractile response has not been noted

Ruminal tryptophan-utilizing bacteria degrade ergovaline from tall fescue seed extract
Journal of Animal Science, 2017The objectives of this study were to evaluate degradation of ergovaline in a tall fescue [ (Schreb.) Darbysh.] seed extract by rumen microbiota ex vivo and to identify specific bacteria capable of ergovaline degradation in vitro. Rumen cell suspensions were prepared by harvesting rumen fluid from fistulated wether goats ( = 3), straining, and ...

Improved Extraction and HPLC Methods for Ergovaline from Plant Material and Rumen Fluid
Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 1994Ergovaline, the main ergopeptine alkaloid produced in tall fescue infected with Acremonium coenophialum, is known to cause tall fescue toxicosis. Current methods in use for quantifying ergovaline in plant material have several disadvantages, including large solvent volumes and long analysis time.

High performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) is used to rapidly determine the presence and amount of ergovalin in seeds of Graminaceae infested with Neotyphodium Coenophialum. Quinine is used as an internal standard. The mycotoxin is solubilized under acid conditions and extracted with chloroform under alkaline conditions.

ERGOVALINE TOXICITY ON CACO-2 CELLS AS ASSESSED BY MTT, ALAMARBLUE, AND DNA ASSAY
In Vitro Cellular and Developmental Biology-Animal, 2003The exact mechanisms of fescue toxicity in animals have yet to be established, but it has been associated with an inability to thrive. Ergovaline is the major ergopeptine alkaloid associated with fungal infections of tall fescue. Gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity of ergovaline (10(-11) to 10(-4) M) was evaluated in Caco-2 cells (mimicking the GI ...

Herbage Mass, Nutritive Value, and Ergovaline Concentration of Stockpiled Tall Fescue
Crop Science, 2003Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) infected with an endophyte that does not produce ergot‐like alkaloids (nontoxic endophyte) has not been evaluated for herbage mass, nutritive value, and ergovaline concentration when stockpiled during winter. Our objective was to quantify these responses for tall fescue infected with a native endophyte (K31 E+),

Ergovaline-induced vasoconstriction in an isolated bovine lateral saphenous vein bioassay.
Journal of animal science, 2007Ergovaline has been proposed as a toxic component of endophyte-infected tall fescue. As many of the symptoms of fescue toxicosis are a result of compromised circulation, the objective of this study was to examine the vasoconstrictive potentials of ergovaline and a more documented ergopeptine, ergotamine, using a bovine, lateral (cranial branch ...
