Ergovaline and Ergot Alkaloid Concentrations Change in Conserved Tall Fescue
Forage & Grazinglands, 2011Ergot alkaloids are toxins in tall fescue that cause severe reductions in animal gain, reproduction, and milk production. This study was conducted over a 2‐year period to determine the change in concentrations of ergovaline and total ergot alkaloids in tall fescue as it is conserved as silage, hay, and ammoniated hay.

Microbiomic Comparison of the Intestine of the Earthworm Eisenia fetida Fed Ergovaline
Current Microbiology, 2009Tall fescue toxicosis and ergot alkaloids cost U.S. livestock producers approximately one billion dollars in annual livestock production loss annually. Ergovaline (EV) is the tall fescue alkaloid primarily responsible for clinical disease in livestock.

Ergovaline Concentration of Tall Fescue as Affected by Limestone Application
Crop, Forage & Turfgrass Management, 2018Core Ideas Limestone application reduced ergovaline concentrations by 20 ppb compared with non‐treated control plots. This slight reduction in ergovaline concentrations is not enough to affect toxicosis, but the reduction occurred with a corresponding increase in soil pH, which can improve the growing conditions for pasture legumes and indirectly ...

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1991
(.)The detection limit of ergovaline in fescue seed and vegetative tissue was 50 μg/kg. Replicate samples, collected each week during two growing seasons from experimental plots of KY-31 tall fescue (85-100% endophyte-infested), were separated into stems with leaf sheaths, leaf blades and developing seed heads.

Effect of Feeding Ergovaline and Ergine on Growing Rats
1997The ergot alkaloids and specifically the ergopeptide, ergovaline have been implicated as alkaloids which are responsible for producing fescue toxicosis. Because of the lack of availability of the suspect alkaloids, studies using fescue alkaloids have been limited to in vitro or in vivo studies in which small quantities of the drug is injected or ...

Simplified Sample Preparation for HPLC Analysis of Ergovaline in Tall Fescue
Crop Science, 1993Increased interest in the endophytic fungus, Acremonium coenophialum Morgan‐Jones & Gams, and its symbiotic inhabitance of tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb., has created the need for rapid and reliable ergovaline analysis in research and in extension service (for diagnosis).

Herbage Mass, Nutritive Value, and Ergovaline Concentration of Stockpiled Tall Fescue
Crop Science, 2003Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) infected with an endophyte that does not produce ergot‐like alkaloids (nontoxic endophyte) has not been evaluated for herbage mass, nutritive value, and ergovaline concentration when stockpiled during winter. Our objective was to quantify these responses for tall fescue infected with a native endophyte (K31 E+),

Effects of feeding ergovaline on lamb performance in a heat stress environment
Journal of Animal Science, 2003Lambs exposed to a heat-stressed environment (33 degrees C, 50% relative humidity) were used in three experiments to determine whether ergovaline (EV) is the primary toxin involved in fescue toxicosis. The first study evaluated the effects of feeding diets containing increasing levels of endophyte-infected tall fescue seed (E+) and decreasing levels of

Quantification of Ergovaline in Tall Fescue by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy
Crop Science, 1997Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was examined as a possible alternative to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis for ergovaline in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreber). Tall fescue samples were collected from field plots in Missouri and analyzed by NIR spectroscopy and HPLC.

Seasonal Fluctuation of Ergovaline and Total Ergot Alkaloid Concentrations in Tall Fescue Regrowth
Crop Science, 2011ABSTRACTCommon cultivars of tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort = Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.] host a fungal endophyte that produces ergot alkaloids. These alkaloids are linked to fescue toxicosis, a serious livestock disorder in the United States.
