Lyophilized Synthetic Platelets: In Vitro Characterization and in Vivo Evaluation in Mouse Thrombocytopenia Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Platelet transfusions to treat bleeding complications use donor‐derived platelets stored at room‐temperature, that have a shelf‐life of only 5–7 days due to bacterial contamination risks. Cold‐stored and freeze‐dried platelets are being investigated for extending shelf‐life, but these still have the inherent challenge of donor‐dependency.

A Biomimetic Lubricant Captures Hyaluronic Acid In Situ to Regenerate Cartilage: From Bench to Bedside

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
(a) The outstanding lubricative properties of natural articular cartilage arise from a composite coating composed of HA, lubricin, and phospholipids at its surface. Notably, lubricin facilitates the enrichment of synovial HA onto cartilage surfaces, and HA complexes with phospholipids, a key component to maintain extremely low friction under high ...

Validity of Erythrocyte Indices in Differentiation between Iron Deficiency Anemia and β-Thalassemia Trait in Children

open access: yesThe Journal of Pediatric Academy
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and β-thalassemia trait (BTT) are the most common causes of hypochromic microcytic anemia (HMA). Various erythrocyte indices that may help in the initial discrimination between IDA and BTT have been reported, but data ...

Erythrocyte indices of iron status in children with cyanotic congenital heart disease at the University College Hospital, Ibadan

open access: yes, 2012
Background Iron (Fe) deficiency is a known feature of cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) and may worsen symptoms. The prevalence of iron deficiency among children with CCHD at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan is unknown.

ROS‐Responsive Nanobubbles for Dual‐Enhanced Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Tumor Oxidative Stress

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We report the development of biotinylated PEGylated bilirubin‐coated perfluoropentane (bt‐PEG‐BR@PFP) nanobubbles, a novel class of ROS‐activatable and dual‐modality contrast agents that amplify both ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals in response to elevated ROS.

Clinical Factors Associated With Non‐Completion of Durvalumab Maintenance Therapy After Chemoradiotherapy in Patients With Locally Advanced Non‐Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Single‐Center Retrospective Study

open access: yesThoracic Cancer
Background Durvalumab maintenance following concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is the standard treatment for unresectable stage III non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, some patients discontinue treatment before completing 12 months. We explored

Erythrocyte voltage-dependent calcium influx is reduced in hemodialyzed patients

open access: yes, 1999
Erythrocyte voltage-dependent calcium influx is reduced in hemodialyzed patients.BackgroundUremia displays increased cytosolic free calcium ([Ca2+]i) in many different cell types, supporting the hypothesis of an altered Ca2+ transport modifying the ...

Materials‐Guided Gene‐Ionizable Lipid Nanoparticles to Reverse Iron‐Associated Immune Resistance in Renal Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iron overload is a common metabolic disturbance in cancer and contributes to poor outcomes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), yet its effects on the tumour immune microenvironment remain unclear. Here we identify a previously unrecognized immunosuppressive axis in which iron overload downregulates the palmitoyltransferase ZDHHC12 in CD8+ T cells ...
