Impact of Non‐Condensable Gas Selection on CO2 Mitigation and Economic Viability in Steam and Gas Push

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
In the oil sands industry of Canada, steam‐assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily due to its reliance on combustion of natural gas for steam. Lowering the cumulative steam–oil ratio (cSOR) is crucial for reducing emissions, with steam and gas push (SAGP) emerging as a viable alternative.

Experimental Evaluation of Residual Oil Saturation in Solvent-Assisted SAGD Using Single-Component Solvents

open access: yesEnergies
The massive heavy oil reserves in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta depend on steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) for their economic exploitation.

A New Mathematical Model for Flow and Heat Transfer of Dual‐String Steam Injection in SAGD

open access: yesGeofluids, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Uneven steam distribution along horizontal wellbores, particularly the disparity between the heel and toe, poses a significant challenge in steam injection for heavy oil recovery. This often leads to asymmetric steam chamber development and premature steam channeling, severely limiting process efficiency.

Machine Learning Prediction of Solvent-Bitumen Viscosity Using Optimized Algorithms for ES-SAGD Applications

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Accurate prediction of solvent-bitumen viscosity is essential for the design and optimization of extended-solvent steam-assisted gravity drainage (ES-SAGD) processes, where viscosity reduction governs fluid mobility and recovery efficiency.

Application of High‐Precision Microgravity Detection Technology in the Exploration of Ultradeep Gas Reservoirs in the Middle Part of the Southern Margin of Junggar Basin

open access: yesGeofluids, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
This study is aimed at identifying the ultradeep gas reservoir structure and gas‐rich areas in the middle section of the southern margin of the Junggar Basin. Based on high‐precision microgravity data collected from the complex terrain areas of Huxi and Tudong in the middle section of the southern margin of the Junggar Basin, residual gravity anomalies

Co-Injection of Noncondensable Gas Improves ES-SAGD Performance in Shallow Oil Sands Reservoirs With a Small Top Water Zone

open access: yes, 2010
The majority of oil sands are too deep for surface mining extraction; hence, in-situ techniques such as Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) must be used. However, SAGD in low-pressure, top water, reservoirs shows relatively poor performance.

A Prior Assessment of Heat Transfer Efficiency From Shale Formations to Hydraulic Fractures in Geothermal Wells Converted From End‐of‐Lifetime Natural Gas Wells

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 13, Issue 12, Page 5802-5809, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Although the conversion of end‐of‐lifetime fractured hydrocarbon wells to geothermal wells has gained a strong momentum in research, it is necessary to perform thorough technical assessments of well conversion before pilot testing. The objective of the study was to perform such an assessment on converting fractured horizontal hydrocarbon wells

Parameterized Local Reduced Order Model of Stimulated Volume Evolution in Reservoirs

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Volume 49, Issue 10, Page 2357-2375, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Real‐time simulation of large‐scale geomechanics problems, such as hydraulic dilation stimulation, is computationally expensive as they must span multiple spatial and temporal length scales, often including nonlinearities and thermo‐hydromechanical processes.
