A History of ESEM in 2.5 Chapters

open access: yesMicroscopy and Microanalysis, 2001
Abstract Microscopy has always been concerned with the observation of samples in their natural states. The earliest instruments, optical microscopes, did not interfere with the samples which were under observation due to the pervasive presence of visible light in the normal evolution of these entities.

How Practitioners Perceive the Relevance of ESEM Research

open access: yesProceedings of the 10th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, 2016
Background: The relevance of ESEM research to industry practitioners is key to the long-term health of the conference. Aims: The goal of this work is to understand how ESEM research is perceived within the practitioner community and provide feedback to the ESEM community ensure our research remains relevant.

Colonisation History of Freshwater Snails Across the Atlantic and Mediterranean Islands: Insights From Mercuria (Littorinimorpha, Hydrobiidae)

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Islands harbour unique biodiversity, and depending on their geological origin, they have fundamentally different colonisation histories: continental islands may contain relict faunas shaped by vicariance and sporadic gene flow, whereas oceanic islands must have been colonised across open seas, often through long‐distance dispersal events ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 12, 17 June 2026.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Using Cu2+‐Centered Complexes as Glue: Two New Layered Polyoxotantalates Based on the Interconnection of the {Ta6O19} Moiety

open access: yesZeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine Chemie, Volume 652, Issue 9, 3 June 2026.
Layered structures of polyoxotantalates generated by different connection modes of the dimeric {(Cu(dien))2Cu(Ta6O19)2} unit. Applying the three different solutions [Cu(dien)]2+ in DMSO/H2O, acetonitrile, and [Ta6O19]6‐/H2O in a layering approach, the two new polyxotantalates [Cu(dien)]5{(Cu(dien)(H2O)2)Cu(Ta6O19)2}·DMSO·32 H2O (I) and K2[(Cu(dien))6 ...

Transmission of family values scale among Italian youth: an investigation of reliability, factorial validity and criterion validity

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adolescence and Youth
Socialization theory suggests that the family is an important sphere for intergenerational value transmission. During adolescence, a period of autonomy and identity development, secure parental attachment provides an environment in which transmission of ...

Hybrid Magnetoactive Soft Elastomers: Material Development Toward Application in Diaphragm Pumps

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 11, Issue 11, 5 June 2026.
Hybrid magnetoactive soft elastomeric membranes are developed by combining two different types of magnetic particles. The membranes exhibit distinct mechanical, magnetic and thermal properties owing to the unique characteristics of the two magnetic particles.

Dry Deposition Strategies for MALDI–MS Imaging: Principles, Advances and Emerging Applications

open access: yesAnalytical Science Advances, Volume 7, Issue 1, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI–MSI) has become a pivotal tool in biomedical research, enabling untargeted, spatially resolved analysis of molecular species in complex biological tissues. Among the critical steps in MALDI–MSI workflows, matrix deposition significantly influences sensitivity, spatial
