Preoperative circulating tumor cells integrated with imaging analysis for prognostic evaluation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in blood before surgery may help predict outcomes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Here, we show when combined with tumor size and lymph node involvement from routine imaging, CTC status identifies high‐risk patients with poorer survival—offering a simple, minimally invasive tool ...

A Review on Estimation of Distribution Algorithms

open access: yes, 2002
In this chapter, we review the Estimation of Distribution Algorithms proposed for the solution of combinatorial optimization problems and optimization in continuous domains. Different approaches for Estimation of Distribution Algorithms have been ordered by the complexity of the interrelations that they are able to express.

Regularized continuous estimation of distribution algorithms

open access: yesApplied Soft Computing, 2013
Regularization is a well-known technique in statistics for model estimation which is used to improve the generalization ability of the estimated model. Some of the regularization methods can also be used for variable selection that is especially useful in high-dimensional problems.

Strategic Decision-Making Learning from Label Distributions: An Approach for Facial Age Estimation

open access: yesSensors, 2016
Nowadays, label distribution learning is among the state-of-the-art methodologies in facial age estimation. It takes the age of each facial image instance as a label distribution with a series of age labels rather than the single chronological age label ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Effective Structure Learning for Estimation of Distribution Algorithms via L1-Regularized Bayesian Networks

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2013
Estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs), as an extension of genetic algorithms, samples new solutions from the probabilistic model, which characterizes the distribution of promising solutions in the search space at each generation.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.
