Gene Expression and the Physiological Role of Transforming Growth Factor-α in the Mouse Pituitary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family, is produced within the mouse anterior pituitaries. However, the cell types of TGF-alpha-expressing cells and the physiological roles of TGF-a within mouse

Cortical Microvascular Pulsatility in the Aging Mouse Brain and the Confounding Effects of Anesthesia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Multi‐modal optical imaging reveals microvascular pulsatility in the brain cortex of awake and anaesthetized mice. Awake hemodynamics in male mice are found to be remarkably stable until late life, with flow pulsatility being significantly higher than in females, despite similar average perfusion.

Role of Peripheral Alpha2 Adrenergic Receptors in Tonic Pain During Different Stages of Estrous Cycle in Rats

open access: yesMajallah-i Dānishgāh-i ’Ulūm-i Pizishkī-i Shahīd Ṣadūqī Yazd, 2007
Introduction: Estrogen and progesterone are supposed to modify pain sensitivity. However, the actual role of each of these steroid hormones in this respect is not well known.

Relationship of the Estrous Cycle to Milk Composition

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1979
The relationship of the estrous cycle to milk composition was examined in 15 Holstein cows in first lactation which were approximately 45 days postpartum. Composite milk samples were collected twice daily and analyzed for progesterone, fat, protein, total solids, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and somatic cells.

Modeling chronic periodontitis in rats: Persistent alveolar bone loss mediated by periodontal pathogens

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Irrigation of periodontal pockets with human periopathogens, in combination with a 14‐day ligature‐induced periodontitis protocol, significantly enhances alveolar bone loss and sustains bacterial colonization for up to 28 days following ligature removal, thereby more closely replicating the chronic nature of human periodontitis compared to the ligature

Gonadal hormones, but not sex, affect the acquisition and maintenance of a Go/No-Go odor discrimination task in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In mice, olfaction is crucial for identifying social odors (pheromones) that signal the presence of suitable mates. We used a custom-built olfactometer and a thirst-motivated olfactory discrimination Go/No-Go (GNG) task to ask whether discrimination of ...

A systematic review of transgender male rodent model methodology

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Summary of successful transgender male rodent model methods. Testosterone enanthate or cypionate injected SC or IM once per week at 18 mg/kg in mice or 3 mg/kg in rats should effectively match naive male testosterone levels of their respective species.
