Degradation of acetaldehyde and its precursors by Pelobacter carbinolicus and P. acetylenicus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Pelobacter carbinolicus and P. acetylenicus oxidize ethanol in syntrophic cooperation with methanogens. Cocultures with Methanospirillum hungatei served as model systems for the elucidation of syntrophic ethanol oxidation previously done with the lost ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Inflating hollow nanocrystals through a repeated Kirkendall cavitation process. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Kirkendall effect has been recently used to produce hollow nanostructures by taking advantage of the different diffusion rates of species involved in the chemical transformations of nanoscale objects.

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

Life fingerprints of nuclear reactions in the body of animals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Nuclear reactions are a very important natural phenomenon in the universe. On the earth, cosmic rays constantly cause nuclear reactions. High energy beams created by medical devices also induce nuclear reactions in the human body.

Pyrolysis-catalytic reforming/gasification of waste tires for production of carbon nanotubes and hydrogen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The production of high-value carbon nanotubes and hydrogen from the two-stage pyrolysis catalytic-steam reforming/gasification of waste tires have been investigated. The catalysts used were Co/Al₂ O₃ , Cu/Al₂ O₃ , Fe/Al₂ O₃ and Ni/Al₂ O₃ .

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Synthesis and structural characterization of a mimetic membrane-anchored prion protein [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
During pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) an abnormal form (PrPSc) of the host encoded prion protein (PrPC) accumulates in insoluble fibrils and plaques. The two forms of PrP appear to have identical covalent structures, but

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol using ultrasonic modified TiO2; an in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy study

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2019
Sonochemical synthesis was employed to make the intrinsic defects in TiO2 (P25) which facilitates good photocatalytic properties. Thereby, the P25 samples are sonicated for various sonication time intervals with the constant pH and temperature.
