Abstract Etheylenediaminetetraacetic acid appears to be a useful drug in the practice of endodontics. The self-limiting properties of the compound appear questionable. There is a possibility that some of the solution might inadvertently find its way into the periapical tissues, as demonstrated by our in vivo monkey sections.

The stability constant of the sodium chelate of EDTA was determined by means of a sodium-sensitive glass electrode. It appears that a hydrogen chelate of the formula NaHY2− is formed in the neutral solution of EDTA, but is very unstable. The crystal structures of tetrasodium (1,2-ethanediyldinitrilo)tetraacetate pentahydrate and disodium dihydrogen (1,2-ethanediyldinitrilo)tetraacetate dihydrate have been determined. Na ions prefer to act as bridges between different edta ligands and only in the tetrasodium salt is the edta ligand hexadentate to one Na ion.

Effects of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA) on Prothrombin Consumption

Abstract Whole human blood was treated with varying concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid to determine the effect upon prothrombin consumption. The prothrombin consumption test was combined with the Dreskin two-stage prothrombin test to determine residual prothrombin as a function of incubation time.
