Eudaimonism and Anti-Eudaimonism
2014This chapter explores the greatest controversy in existing scholarship on Cyrenaic ethics, which is the school's “anti-eudaimonism.” On the basis of Anniceris' formulation of the end many scholars have asserted that Cyrenaics are not “eudaimonists,” meaning their ethics does not center on the pursuit of happiness through cultivation of the virtues. The concept of eudaimonia plays a crucial role in understanding virtue on some quite influential virtue ethical theories. It can be understood as happiness, as a property of lives. It is on many influential accounts the focus of virtue and the standard for excellence in living and acting.

Feminist Eudaimonism: Eudaimonism as Non-Ideal Theory
2009This chapter considers whether eudaimonism is necessarily an idealizing approach to ethics. I argue, contrary to what is implied by Christine Swanton, that it is not, and I suggest that a non-ideal eudaimonistic virtue ethics can be useful for feminist and critical race theorists.

AbstractIn contrast to eudaimonism, Kant argues that moral reasoning and prudential reasoning are two distinct uses of practical reason, each with its own standard for good action. Despite Kant’s commitment to the ineradicable potential for fundamental conflict between these types of practical reasoning, I argue that once we shift to consideration of a

Abstract Chapter 4 examines a series of philosophical objections to eudaimonism, concluding that many contemporary accounts of eudaimonism are objectionably self-regarding. They are what Anne Baril terms “welfare-prior,” whereas a defensible eudaimonism must be “goodness-prior.” To say that eudaimonia is moral agents’ final end is to ...

Eudaimonic well-being and education
2018This chapter relies on the distinction between hedonic and eudaimonic well-being as proposed in the seminal work by Ryan and Decy and presents the strong historical connection of the latter with education. It looks at the strong connection between eudaimonic well-being and education, suggesting that eudaimonic well-being education must be intended as ...

AbstractEudaimonism is often regarded as egoistic. If it recommends that agents pursue their own good because it is their own good, it is guilty as charged. But excellence‐prior eudaimonism offers a non‐egoistic alternative to this welfare‐prior eudaimonism.

The two most important and central concepts in ancient ethical theory are those of virtue (aretē) and happiness (eudaimonia). This is well-known by now, as is the way that many scholars and philosophers have in recent years investigated the structure of ancient ethical theories, at least partly in the hope that this would help us in our modern ethical ...
