Fossil melanosomes or bacteria? A wealth of findings favours melanosomes:Melanin fossilises relatively readily, bacteria rarely, hence the need for clarification in the debate over the identity of microbodies in fossil animal specimens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The discovery of fossil melanosomes has resulted in a wealth of research over the last 7 years, notably the reconstruction of colour in dinosaurs and fossil mammals.

Multiscale analysis of oxidative damage in hair fibers: From AFM nanomechanics to AI‐based degradation modeling

open access: yesVIEW, Volume 6, Issue 6, December 2025.
We investigated oxidative damage in human hair fibers using SEM and AFM‐based nanomechanical mapping, revealing progressive cuticle degradation and localized mechanical softening. cGAN was employed to model time‐dependent degradation, offering a predictive framework for assessing chemical damage in soft biomaterials.

The physical and chemical properties of eumelanin

open access: yesPigment Cell Research, 2006
SummaryIn this article, we review the current state of knowledge concerning the physical and chemical properties of the eumelanin pigment. We examine properties related to its photoprotective functionality, and draw the crucial link between fundamental molecular structure and observable macroscopic behaviour.

Functional Characterisation of Microbial Communities Related to Black Stain Formation in Lascaux Cave

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 6, December 2025.
Excessive anthropization can lead to black stain alterations on cave walls. The present work reports the first metagenomic analysis of black stains threatening artwork in Lascaux Cave. Findings show new microbial taxa and genetic potential associated with black stains.

Sustainable Development Path of Traditional High-Pollution Bleaching Process for Animal Fibers: Key Mechanisms, Critical Influencing Factors and Bottlenecks—A Review

open access: yesJournal of Natural Fibers
Animal fiber is an important raw material for textiles. Dark animal fibers cannot be directly dyed by light colors, which is difficult to meet the demand for color diversity in clothing.

Anti‐melanogenic effects of Medicago sativa seed extracts on melanocytes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, Volume 47, Issue 6, Page 1005-1016, December 2025.
Our study demonstrated that two types of alfalfa seed extract: alfalfa ethanol precipitate (AEP) and alfalfa ethanol supernatant (AES) inhibited melanogenesis through the downregulation of tyrosinase expression, following the inactivation of CREB, b‐catenin and ERK signalling pathway in α‐melanocyte‐stimulating hormone (α‐MSH)‐stimulated B16F10 mouse ...

Transplantable melanomas in hamsters and gerbils as models for human melanoma : sensitization in melanoma radiotherapy : from animal models to clinical trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The focus of the present review is to investigate the role of melanin in the radioprotection of melanoma and attempts to sensitize tumors to radiation by inhibiting melanogenesis. Early studies showed radical scavenging, oxygen consumption and adsorption

Transcriptome Comparison Reveals Key Components of Nuptial Plumage Coloration in Crested Ibis

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Nuptial plumage coloration is critical in the mating choice of the crested ibis. This species has a characteristic nuptial plumage that develops from the application of a black sticky substance, secreted by a patch of skin in the throat and neck region ...

Bridging the gap between the gas and solution phase : solvent specific photochemistry in 4-tert-butylcatechol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Eumelanin is a naturally synthesized ultraviolet light absorbing biomolecule, possessing both photoprotective and phototoxic properties. We infer insight into these properties of eumelanin using a bottom-up approach, by investigating a subunit analogue ...
