Managing Profound Suffering at the End-of-Life: Should expanding access to continuous deep sedation be the priority?

open access: yesBioéthiqueOnline, 2015
This paper argues that in addressing and managing profound suffering at the end-of-life, the priority should not be the legalization of physician-assisted suicide or voluntary active euthanasia in jurisdictions where these practices are not currently ...

Myosin VI Is Associated With the Endoplasmic Reticulum in Regions of Sertoli Cells Containing Tubulobulbar Complexes

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Myosin VI has been reported by others to localize in association with various regions of apical tubulobulbar complexes (TBCs) at sites of attachment between Sertoli cells and late spermatids in the mouse. Tubulobulbar complexes internalize “intact” intercellular junctions during sperm release and during spermatocyte translocation through the ...

Squamate ventricular cardiomyocytes: Ploidy, proliferation, and heart muscle cell size in the leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius)

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background While heart function is broadly conserved across vertebrates, the cellular phenotype of muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) varies across taxa and throughout ontogeny. Emerging evidence suggests that some attributes may correlate with the capacity for spontaneous cardiomyocyte replacement following injury.

Effectiveness, economics, and safety of drop nets and helicopters with net‐gunning for capturing white‐tailed deer

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 46, Issue 5, December 2022., 2022
We evaluated capture effectiveness, monetary cost, and safety for drop net and both single and tandem helicopter with net‐gun techniques for white‐tailed deer. While all three techniques were safe and effective methods for deer capture, the tandem‐helicopter technique was superior in balancing effectiveness, cost, safety, and maximizing spatial ...

Maximum longevity and juvenile mortality in zoo‐housed mangabeys

open access: yesZoo Biology, Volume 41, Issue 6, Page 522-532, November/December 2022., 2022
The international studbooks of two Lophocebus mangabey species were analyzed. Sex, as well as traits of the mother, serve as proxies for the maximum longevity of individuals. Also, intercontinental differences in cumulative survival rates seem to exist for the captive populations of these mangabeys; underlying effects remain to be discovered.
