The influence of antenna height on microwave propagation in evaporation duct

open access: closedGlobal Oceans 2020: Singapore – U.S. Gulf Coast, 2020
In this paper, the influence of antenna height on microwave propagation in evaporation duct is investigated, both from numerical simulation and experimental observation. Comparisons of microwave propagation with different antenna heights under different conditions, such as different evaporation duct heights (EDHs) and signal frequencies, are presented.

Determination of the evaporation duct height from standard meteorological data

open access: closedIzvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics, 2007
Four models used for evaluating the height of the evaporation duct from measured atmospheric pressure, water and air temperatures, and air humidity are considered. The calculated results are compared with the duct heights measured during two oceanographic expeditions in the tropical zone of the Atlantic Ocean and the equatorial zone of the Indian Ocean.

An Evaporation Duct Height Prediction Method Based on Deep Learning

open access: closedIEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2018
An evaporation duct is a particular atmospheric duct that is crucial for marine vessel communication, and one of the most significant indexes to assess it is evaporation duct height (EDH). In this letter, we propose a new method based on a multilayer perceptron (MLP), a classic network in deep learning, to predict the EDH.

X-band beacon-receiver array evaporation duct height estimation

open access: closed2015 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation & USNC/URSI National Radio Science Meeting, 2015
Radiowave propagation in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) remains a subject of research interest given the potential utility of the ducting propagation mechanism. Ducting propagation is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions; experiments that combine propagation measurements with detailed atmospheric characterization can offer ...

A sensitivity study of weather data inaccuracies on evaporation duct height algorithms

open access: closedRadio Science, 1991
The sensitivity of five evaporation duct height algorithms to errors in shipboard meteorological data is examined, and the algorithms are intercompared. The data set used was generated parametrically so a large variation of environmental conditions could be considered.

Effects of objective functions on evaporation duct height estimation from radar sea clutter

open access: closedProceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Antennas, Propagation and EM Theory, 2010
A new evaporation duct profile structure is presented by two parameters: evaporation duct height and strength. Two different objective functions are also introduced and analyzed, which show that the objective functions are multi-peak and not sensitive to evaporation duct strength.

A Passive Technique to Monitor Evaporation Duct Height Using Coastal GNSS-R

open access: closedIEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2011
We report on a coastal experiment to monitor evaporation duct height (EDH) using GPS-L1 signals scattered from the sea surface. The campaign was carried out in the South China Sea and was focused on the development of an EDH inversion technique. A high-sensitivity delay-mapping receiver was built for this purpose to collect and process direct and ...

A simple method to determine evaporation duct height in the sea surface boundary layer

open access: closedRadio Science, 1992
A formulation to determine the evaporation duct height in the sea surface boundary layer is presented. This formulation is based upon the theory of similarity of Monin Obukhov by using analytical solutions currently used in the field of numerical weather prediction.
