eVTOL Reality Check: What Makes an eVTOL Design Truly Viable?

An eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft is an emerging class of battery-powered vehicles capable of taking off vertically, flying long distances, and landing vertically using electric propulsion. Designed for urban air mobility, cargo transport, and regional flight, eVTOLs have attracted global attention, with hundreds of companies ...

Intelligent Control for Fixed-Wing eVTOL Aircraft

2021
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) holds promise for personal air transportation by deploying "flying cars" over cities. As such, fixed-wing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has gained popularity as they can swiftly traverse cluttered areas, while also efficiently covering longer distances.

Working Group on eVTOL Noise Assessment

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 76th Annual Forum, 2020
Acceptance of close-proximity eVTOL aircraft depends on public perception that they are quiet in relation to the environment. When they are audible, their influence on community soundscapes must not be intrusive. To solve for that, measurement of "quiet" is needed using a physiological model of hearing rather than a sound pressure measurement ...

eVTOL Modeling Frameworks: A Comparative Study

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 80th Annual Forum
For the last few decades, Canada's National Research Council (NRC) has been at the forefront in analyzing dynamic systems and developing tools to construct aircraft models based on flight test data. With a fixed and rotary-wing aircraft fleet available, NRC has the capability to perform leading edge R&D System Identification (SI); this ...

Recent Examples of eVTOL Aeroacoustics

This seminar presents recent work carried out at the CFD Laboratory of Glasgow on eVTOL. The seminar will present a method for eVTOL rotor blade optimisation based on harmonic balance CFD, and demonstrate its use. Examples from aeroacoustics computations will them be given covering propeller and prop-rotor noise.
