This chapter focuses on ex situ (off-site) conservation, which is the protection and management of biodiversity in artificial, human-built environments. Indeed, ex situ conservation allows wild-caught individuals to be maintained under close human supervision in facilities like zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, or arboretums.

Velocity imaging by ex situ NMR
Journal of Magnetic Resonance, 2005A pulsed field gradient stimulated spin-echo NMR sequence is combined with imaging methods to spatially resolve velocity distributions and to measure 2D velocity maps ex situ. The implementation of these techniques in open sensors provides a powerful non-invasive tool to measure molecular displacement in a large number of applications inaccessible to ...

In Situ and Ex Situ Conservation of Chinese Plants
2020In total, 28,385 higher plants were distributed in the nature reserves, accounting for 77.0% of the total number of higher plants in China. Among them, there are 3842 species which are effectively protected; 2478 species are better protected. More than 84.4% endangered species grow in national and/or provincial natural reserves.

In situ and ex situ Cu doping of MgB2
Physica C: Superconductivity, 2005Abstract The effect of in situ and ex situ Cu doping on MgB 2 was studied in the annealing temperature range of 600 °C–900 °C. Attempts to substitute Cu into MgB 2 resulted in the formation of Mg–Cu phases. Within the limits of error, neither lattice strain nor significant alteration in a - and c -axes was introduced by varying annealing ...

Ex-situ bioremediation of chlorobenzenes in soil
Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2008Chlorinated benzenes, including chlorobenzene (CB) and 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) are widely used as chemical intermediates and solvents across industry. Soil contaminated with these compounds was treated in a pilot-scale trial in 6 m3 cells. Air was drawn through each cell and exhausted via an activated carbon (GAC) filter system.

In situ and ex situ Evaluation of Mechanisms of Lateral Epitaxial Overgrowth
physica status solidi (a), 2001Metal organic chemical vapour deposition was used for lateral epitaxial overgrowth of GaN on stripe-patterned SiO2 masks 200 and 500 nm in thickness. Overgrowths were conducted under constant conditions, at a nominal temperature of 1140 degreesC. Mechanistic aspects were investigated by a combination of ex situ imaging methods and in situ optical ...
