Exceptional preservation of reproductive organs and giant sperm in Cretaceous ostracods [PDF]
The bivalved crustacean ostracods have the richest fossil record of any arthropod group and display complex reproductive strategies contributing to their evolutionary success. Sexual reproduction involving giant sperm, shared by three superfamilies of living ostracod crustaceans, is among the most fascinating behaviours.

Exceptional preservation of Palaeozoic steroids in a diagenetic continuum [PDF]
The occurrence of intact sterols has been restricted to immature Cretaceous (~125 Ma) sediments with one report from the Late Jurassic (~165 Ma). Here we report the oldest occurrence of intact sterols in a Crustacean fossil preserved for ca. 380 Ma within a Devonian concretion.

Exceptional preservation and foot structure reveal ecological transitions and lifestyles of early theropod flyers [PDF]
The shape of bird toe pads and foot scales can be used to infer their behaviour. Here, the authors examine fossil evidence of toe pads and scales, in addition to claws and bones, from birds and close relatives, illustrating diverse lifestyles and ...

Exceptional preservation of eye structure in arthropod visual predators from the Middle Jurassic [PDF]
Understanding how ancient animals perceived their environment is difficult due to a lack of fossilized eye structures. Here, the authors reconstruct the compound eye of a 160-million-year old thylacocephalan arthropod, Dollocaris, finding evidence of ...

Three-dimensionally preserved soft tissues and calcareous hexactins in a Silurian sponge: implications for early sponge evolution [PDF]
Sponges (Porifera), as one of the earliest-branching animal phyla, are crucial for understanding early metazoan phylogeny. Recent studies of Lower Palaeozoic sponges have revealed a variety of character states and combinations unknown in extant taxa ...

In situ SEM/EDS compositional characterization of osteocytes and blood vessels in fossil and extant turtles on untreated bone surfaces; different preservational pathways microns away [PDF]
Osteocytes and blood vessels are the main cellular and tissue components of the bone tissue of vertebrates. Evidence of these soft-tissue microstructures has been widely documented in the fossil record of Mesozoic and Cenozoic turtles. However, all these
