Rhythm Across Species: Situating Human Speech in a Comparative Framework

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1563, Issue 1, September 2026.
We analyzed speech rhythms from 48 human languages using methods drawn from biology and linguistics. Interonset intervals across languages are surprisingly similar, with a median value of 2 seconds., despite substantial differences in linguistic structure and prosody. A comparative rhythm analysis shows that human speech falls within the range reported

Differential effects of central blood volume loading and unloading on pulmonary diffusing capacity in humans

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 18, Page 7957-7970, 15 September 2026.
Abstract figure legend Central blood volume (CBV) is a key haemodynamic determinant of pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and its components, capillary blood volume (Vc) and membrane diffusing capacity (Dm,CO). However the contribution of CBV to DLCO regulation remains poorly defined. We investigated the effects of graded increases
