Achieving Quantum Limits of Exoplanet Detection and Localization [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Discovering exoplanets in orbit around distant stars via direct imaging is fundamentally impeded by the high dynamic range between the star and the planet. Coronagraphs strive to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of exoplanet signatures by optically rejecting light from the host star while leaving light from the exoplanet mostly unaltered.

Clouds and Hazes in GJ 1214 b’s Metal-rich Atmosphere

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
The sub-Neptune GJ 1214 b has an infamously flat transmission spectrum, likely due to thick aerosols in its atmosphere. A recent JWST/MIRI spectroscopic phase curve of GJ 1214 b added to this picture, suggesting a highly reflective and metal-rich ...

TESS Giants Transiting Giants. VI. Newly Discovered Hot Jupiters Provide Evidence for Efficient Obliquity Damping after the Main Sequence

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
The degree of alignment between a star’s spin axis and the orbital plane of its planets (the stellar obliquity) is related to interesting and poorly understood processes that occur during planet formation and evolution.

Early Time Small-scale Structures in Hot Exoplanet Atmosphere Simulations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We report on the critical influence of small-scale flow structures (e.g., fronts, vortices, and waves) that immediately arise in hot exoplanet atmosphere simulations initialized with a resting state.
