Comparative Analysis of the Behavior of Llamas Housed in a Research Facility in Response to Different Environmental Enrichment Stimuli. [PDF]

open access: yesAnim Sci J
ABSTRACT Environmental enrichment (EE) is essential for promoting welfare and reducing atypical behaviors in captive research animals, but we know little about effective EE strategies for llamas (Lama glama). This study evaluated the behavioral responses to EE items provided to llamas housed in a biomedical research facility in Brazil, where they are ...

Hybridization, Maternal Inheritance, and Evolutionary Time of Divergence of Endangered Species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Xingu River. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We uncover recent hybridization dynamics among three endemic Hypancistrus species from the Xingu River, including the critically endangered H. zebra. Mitogenomic analyses reveal unidirectional maternal inheritance and recent evolutionary radiation (< 0.5 Ma), explaining their retained reproductive compatibility.

New method of video-assisted vaginoscopy in Nellore heifers. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Sci, 2023
Vaginoscopy was performed on 2 groups of 13 heifers, a control group using a vaginal speculum and a test group using a new Scope VOR&GDI instrument. The new instrument showed better efficiency for identifying intravaginal structures and characteristics with better image quality and comfort for the examiner and patient.

B-Mode Ultrasonographic Evaluation and Reference Dimensions of the Liver and Spleen in Healthy Lactating Saanen Goats. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Radiol Ultrasound
ABSTRACT This study aimed to establish reference ultrasonographic parameters for the liver and spleen in 34 healthy Saanen goats. The spleen was visualized between the 12th and 8th intercostal spaces (ICS), with homogeneous parenchyma and a hyperechoic capsule and splenic vein with a mean diameter of 3.3 ± 0.9 mm.

Adiponectin reverses β‐Cell damage and impaired insulin secretion induced by obesity

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 22, Issue 6, June 2023., 2023
Incubation of β‐cells with sera or plasma from obese rats and humans hampers mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and glucose‐stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) relative to sera and plasma from lean rats and humans. Adiponectin, found at elevated levels in lean subjects, supports β‐cell function on its own, in the absence of sera, and also reverses

Red cell distribution width values and red cell distribution width‐to‐platelet ratio in Thoroughbred foals in the first 24 hours of life

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 217-222, March/April 2023., 2023
Abstract Objectives To report red cell distribution width (RDW) values, to calculate RDW‐to‐platelet ratio (RPR), and to investigate a possible correlation of RDW and RPR index values in neonatal foals classified as healthy or at risk based on clinical information from a population of foals up to 24 hours of life.

Biochemical and Toxinological Characterization of Venom from Macrorhynchia philippina (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa)

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Macrorhynchia philippina is a colonial benthic hydroid from the Class Hydrozoa (Phylum Cnidaria) distributed in the tropical and subtropical marine waters from Atlantic Ocean, Indo‐Pacific, and Mozambique. Its colonies somewhat resemble plants, causing confusion in the bathers who accidentally touch the animal. Acute burning/local pain, edema, erythema,
