WDRIV-Net: a weighted ensemble transfer learning to improve automatic type stratification of lumbar intervertebral disc bulge, prolapse, and herniation

open access: yesBioMedical Engineering OnLine
The degeneration of the intervertebral discs in the lumbar spine is the common cause of neurological and physical dysfunctions and chronic disability of patients, which can be stratified into single—(e.g., disc herniation, prolapse, or bulge) and ...

Studies on thermo-oxidative degradation of synthetic rubbers 1-4 and 1-2 polybutadienes

open access: yesVietnam Journal of Science, Technology and Engineering, 2017
The production of natural latex is limited, and the related demand for terrestrial transportation has increased. The synthesis of rubber has become necessary and the resulting synthetics’ properties must be known.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Varieties of Exploratory Experimentation in Nanotoxicology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
There has been relatively little effort to provide a systematic overview of different forms of exploratory experimentation (EE). The present paper examines the growing subdiscipline of nanotoxicology and suggests that it illustrates at least four ways ...

Geoengineering as Collective Experimentation

open access: yes, 2015
Geoengineering is defined as the 'deliberate and large-scale intervention in the Earth's climatic system with the aim of reducing global warming'. The technological proposals for doing this are highly speculative. Research is at an early stage, but there

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Generative agents in the streets: Exploring the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in collecting urban perceptions

open access: yesComputers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans
Evaluating the surroundings to gain understanding, frame perspectives, and anticipate behavioral reactions is an inherent human trait. However, these continuous encounters are diverse and complex, posing challenges to their study and experimentation ...

A Novel Resilient Robot: Kinematic Analysis and Experimentation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
A resilient robot is a robot that can recover its function after the robot is partially damaged. In this paper, a study of an under-actuated resilient robot with closed loops and passive joints is presented.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
