Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Effects of Size and Temperature‐Dependent Thermal Conductivity on the Cooling of Pyroclasts in Air

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2018
The knowledge of the cooling time scales of pyroclasts, in conditions of free to forced convection, is of paramount importance in microtextural analysis, development of welded deposits, and in eruption column and pyroclast flow modeling.

Hadron Production Experiments

open access: yes, 2017
Precise prediction of the neutrino flux is a key ingredient to achieving the physics goals of accelerator-based neutrino experiments. In modern accelerator-based neutrino experiments, neutrino beams are created by colliding protons with a nuclear target.

Transcendental Experience as a Thought Experiment [PDF]

open access: yesHORIZON. Studies in Phenomenology, 2015
In my article I would like to discuss a topic concerning the idea of mental experience as an experiment in the transcendental philosophy. One of the main problems of the humanities is that one can see a big difference between two branches of knowledge: human sciences and «exact» sciences.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Double beta decay experiments

open access: yes, 2006
The present status of double beta decay experiments are reviewed. The results of the most sensitive experiments, NEMO-3 and CUORICINO, are discussed. Proposals for future double beta decay experiments are considered.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Experiments on atmospheric processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
Spacelab technology is examined as applied to the observation of the earth's weather patterns, composition, thermodynamics, and kinematics. An atmospheric cloud physics laboratory and a geophysical fluid flow cell are individually outlined as planned ...
