Formation of Topological Defects with Explicit Symmetry Breaking [PDF]

open access: greenPhysical Review Letters, 1996
We demonstrate a novel mechanism for the formation of topological defects in a first order phase transition for theories in the presence of small explicit symmetry breaking terms. We carry out numerical simulations of collisions of two bubbles in 2+1 dimensions for a field theory where U(1) global symmetry is spontaneously as well as explicitly broken.

Generation of new symmetries from explicit symmetry breaking [PDF]

open access: diamondJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2021
Abstract We study how the explicit symmetry breaking, through a continuous parameter in the Lagrangian, can actually lead to the creation of different types of symmetries. As examples we consider the motion of a relativistic particle in a curved background, where a nonzero mass breaks the symmetry of the conformal algebra of the metric ...

Spontaneous and explicit parity-time-symmetry breaking in drift-wave instabilities [PDF]

open access: greenPhysical Review E, 2021
A method of Parity-Time (PT)-symmetry analysis is introduced to study the high dimensional, complicated parameter space of drift wave instabilities. We show that spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking leads to the Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) instability of drift waves, and the collisional instability is the result of explicit PT-symmetry breaking.

Persistence of stationary motion under explicit symmetry breaking perturbation [PDF]

open access: hybridNonlinearity, 2019
Abstract Explicit symmetry breaking occurs when a dynamical system having a certain symmetry group is perturbed to a system which has strictly less symmetry. We give a geometric approach to study this phenomenon in the setting of Hamiltonian systems.

LIGHT PSEUDO-GOLDSTONE BOSONS WITHOUT EXPLICIT SYMMETRY BREAKING [PDF]

open access: greenInternational Journal of Modern Physics A, 2007
A mechanism is discussed to obtain light scalar fields from a spontaneously broken continuous symmetry without explicitly breaking it. If there is a continuous manifold of classical vacua in orbit space, its tangent directions describe classically massless fields that may acquire mass from perturbations of the potential that do not break the symmetry.

Ultrafast probing of isotope-induced explicit symmetry breaking in ethylene [PDF]

open access: goldCommunications Chemistry
Symmetry governs nature’s laws, yet many of the natural phenomena occur due to the breakdown of symmetry. Here, we show how isotope-induced inversion symmetry breaking influences ultrafast photoisomerization processes in ethylene.

Spontaneous versus explicit replica symmetry breaking in the theory of disordered systems [PDF]

open access: greenPhysical Review E, 2010
We investigate the relation between spontaneous and explicit replica symmetry breaking in the theory of disordered systems. On general ground, we prove the equivalence between the replicon operator associated with the stability of the replica symmetric solution in the standard replica scheme and the operator signaling a breakdown of the solution with ...

Simulation of vortex-antivortex pair production in a phase transition with explicit symmetry breaking [PDF]

open access: green, 1998
We carry out numerical simulation of the formation of U(1) global vortices in a first order phase transition in 2+1 dimensions in the presence of small explicit symmetry breaking.

Explicit formulas, symmetry and symmetry breaking for Willmore surfaces of revolution [PDF]

open access: greenAnnals of Global Analysis and Geometry, 2017
In this paper we prove explicit formulas for all Willmore surfaces of revolution and demonstrate their use in the discussion of the associated Dirichlet boundary value problems. It is shown by an explicit example that symmetric Dirichlet boundary conditions do in general not entail the symmetry of the surface. In addition we prove a symmetry result for
