Spontaneous and Explicit Spacetime Symmetry Breaking in Einstein-Cartan Theory with Background Fields [PDF]
Explicit and spontaneous breaking of spacetime symmetry under diffeomorphisms, local translations, and local Lorentz transformations due to the presence of fixed background fields is examined in Einstein-Cartan theory. In particular, the roles of torsion and violation of local translation invariance are highlighted.

Spontaneous and explicit parity-time-symmetry breaking in drift wave instabilities [PDF]
A method of Parity-Time (PT)-symmetry analysis is introduced to study the high dimensional, complicated parameter space of drift wave instabilities. We show that spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking leads to the Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) instability of drift waves, and the collisional instability is the result of explicit PT-symmetry breaking.

Explicit formulas, symmetry and symmetry breaking for Willmore surfaces of revolution [PDF]
In this paper we prove explicit formulas for all Willmore surfaces of revolution and demonstrate their use in the discussion of the associated Dirichlet boundary value problems. It is shown by an explicit example that symmetric Dirichlet boundary conditions do in general not entail the symmetry of the surface. In addition we prove a symmetry result for

Interplay of dynamical and explicit chiral symmetry breaking effects on a quark [PDF]
The relative contributions of explicit and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD models of the quark-gap equation are studied in dependence of frequently employed ans\"atze for the dressed interaction and quark-gluon vertex. The explicit symmetry breaking contributions are defined by a constituent-quark sigma term whereas the combined effects of ...

Explicit spacetime-symmetry breaking and the dynamics of primordial fields [PDF]
We study the effects of explicit spacetime-symmetry breaking on primordial tensor fluctuations using an effective-field theory for Lorentz/CPT violation.

One-loop fermion determinant with explicit chiral symmetry breaking [PDF]
We use a proper-time regularization to define the one-loop fermion determinant for the case in which explicit chiral symmetry breaking takes place. We show how to obtain the polynomial by which the standard definition of lndetD needs to be modified in order to arrive at the fermion determinant whose transformation properties are consistent with the ...

Formation of defects associated with both spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking [PDF]
We discuss formation of cosmic strings associated with a spontaneously broken approximate $U(1)$ symmetry by performing classical field-theoretical simulations. An original $U(1)$ symmetry is explicitly broken down to its subgroup $Z_N$ even before spontaneous breaking takes place.

Generation of new symmetries from explicit symmetry breaking [PDF]
We study how the explicit symmetry breaking, through a continuous parameter in the Lagrangian, can actually lead to the creation of different types of symmetries. As examples we consider the motion of a relativistic particle in a curved background, where

Spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking of thermoacoustic eigenmodes in imperfect annular geometries [PDF]
This article deals with the symmetry breaking of azimuthal thermoacoustic modes in annular combustors. Using a nominally symmetric annular combustor, we present experimental evidence of a predicted spontaneous reflectional symmetry breaking, and also an ...

Spontaneous versus explicit replica symmetry breaking in the theory of disordered systems [PDF]
We investigate the relation between spontaneous and explicit replica symmetry breaking in the theory of disordered systems. On general ground, we prove the equivalence between the replicon operator associated with the stability of the replica symmetric solution in the standard replica scheme and the operator signaling a breakdown of the solution with ...
