Monitoring Techniques of Bone Fracture Healing Using External Fixators

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2015
Long bone fractures can be healed using external fixators – devices that stiffly fix the fractured fragments, attached to the bone by pins parallel to the bone frame.

Monitoring External Resources in Java MIDP [PDF]

open access: yesElectronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science, 2008
We present a Java library for mobile phones which tracks and controls at runtime the use of potentially costly resources, such as premium rate text messages. This improves on the existing framework (MIDP -- the Mobile Information Device Profile [JSR 118 Expert Group. JSR 118: Mobile information device profile 2.0.

An analysis of internal and external feedback in self-regulated learning activities mediated by self-regulated learning tools and open learner models

open access: yesInternational Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, 2020
In self-regulated learning (SRL), students organize, monitor, direct, and regulate their learning. In SRL, monitoring plays a critical role in generating internal feedback and thus adopting appropriate regulations.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
