Evidence for periodicities in the extinction record? Response to Melott & Bambach [arXiv:1307.1884] [PDF]
In a recent paper, we applied time series analysis methods to study the possible influence of the solar motion through the Galaxy on terrestrial extinction (Feng & Bailer-Jones 2013). We drew conclusions about the relative probabilities of how well different models explain the geological extinction record.

State of the Art of Low‐Frequency Acoustic Modulation: Intensity Enhancement and Directional Control
High intensity low‐frequency sound sources hold significant value in many fields. However, their long wavelength, strong penetrability, and tendency to diffract make direction control and intensity enhancement challenging. Acoustic generators and metamaterial‐based acoustic devices still face issues such as low energy efficiency, poor directional ...

Scaling laws in the evolutionary processes of marine animals over the last 540 million years
Scaling laws are ubiquitous in modern biological systems. However, whether such patterns existed in deep-time biological systems is less investigated; the best-known example is the scaling law between the frequency and size of extinction events.

Possible detection of atmospheric bioaerosol via LiDAR: a wavelength-based simulation study
This study explores potential of LiDAR technology to rapidly detect aerosolized biological terror agents in the atmosphere. It assesses the application by simulating extinction coefficients and the Ångström exponent at various wavelengths (266, 1064 ...

Maximal Sensitive Dependence and the Optimal Path to Epidemic Extinction [PDF]
Extinction of an epidemic or a species is a rare event that occurs due to a large, rare stochastic fluctuation. Although the extinction process is dynamically unstable, it follows an optimal path that maximizes the probability of extinction. We show that the optimal path is also directly related to the finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the underlying ...

Direct Quantification of Protein–Protein Interactions in Living Bacterial Cells
Quantitative measurement of protein–protein interactions in living cells is vital for biotechnology applications. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) signals in bacterial cells are often weak, leading to false‐positive. Quantitative FRET measurements are implemented to overcome the weak FRET signal.

Extinção e o Registro Fóssil [PDF]
The extinctions and their relationships with the biological evolution allow the changes in the biota patterns through the geological time. In this study is presented a synthesis of the extinction events registered in the paleontological data and their ...

Label-free single molecule imaging with numerical aperture-shaped interferometric scattering microscopy [PDF]
Our ability to optically interrogate nanoscopic objects is controlled by the difference between their extinction cross sections and the diffraction limited area to which light can be confined in the far field. We show that a partially transmissive spatial mask placed near the back focal plane of a high numerical aperture microscope objective enhances ...

Tuning Aggregation in Liquid‐Crystalline Squaraine Chromophores
A novel squaraine dye (SQ) forming columnar liquid crystal (LC) phase is synthesized, whose aggregate state can be tuned without disturbing the columnar structures. The liquid crystallization not only offers a rich spectrum and tuning method of optical property but also a novel path for the prescriptive functionalization of LC SQ materials.
