Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

Rhizopus oryzae Hydrolases from Solid-State Fermentation: A Gateway to Food Waste Valorization

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Moulds of the Rhizopus oryzae species exhibit high biotechnological potential due to their significant metabolic activity, which is influenced by cultivation conditions. The study aimed to evaluate the ability of R.

Extracellular Enzyme Activity from Hot Springs in Panama

open access: yes, 2019
Microbes found in subsurface water and sediment play an important role in biogeochemical cycling. Heterotrophic microbes require extracellular enzymes to cleave bonds of macromolecules, in order to take up and ultimately metabolize organic carbon and ...

Natural Products as Geroprotective Modulators in Diabetic Nephropathy: A Mechanistic Framework Integrating Aging Hallmarks and the AMPK–SIRT1–Nrf2 Axis

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Natural products target the aging kidney in diabetic nephropathy by restoring the AMPK–SIRT1–Nrf2 axis, reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, and cellular senescence while enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant defenses.

CX3CL1 in Early Detection of Alzheimer's Disease: Plasma Dynamics Across Age and Disease Stages

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Backgrounds Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid‐beta plaques, tau tangles, and neuroinflammation. C‐X3‐C motif chemokine ligand 1 (CX3CL1, also known as fractalkine), a neuroimmune chemokine implicated in AD pathogenesis, shows inconsistent alterations in plasma/serum across studies.

Higher Soil Mesofauna Abundance and Microbial Activities Drive Litter Decomposition in Subtropical Forests

open access: yesDiversity
Soil fauna play an important role in litter decomposition and affect the “home-field advantage” (HFA) of litter decomposition. However, how this effect is modulated by the microenvironment needs further investigation. We conducted a reciprocal transplant

Development of adenosine signalling in the cerebellum [PDF]

open access: yes
The release and clearance of adenosine are reasonably well-documented in the mature CNS but relatively little is known about how adenosine signalling changes during postnatal development.

Peripheral Neutrophil Activation and Extracellular Trap Formation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Markers of neutrophil activation are increased in plasma during ALS, and markers of NET formation associate with ALS survival. ABSTRACT Objectives Peripheral neutrophil levels in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) inversely correlate with survival, suggesting a role for neutrophils in disease progression.
