Biochar as Electron Acceptor for Microbial Extracellular Respiration
Geomicrobiology Journal, 2016ABSTRACTBiochar is a charred carbonaceous material that has recently been identified to provide many potential environmental and agricultural applications. Biochar amendments are shown to effectively improve the quality of soil and increase soil microbial biomass.

Stimulation of Sperm Respiration Rates by Speract and Resact at Alkaline Extracellular pH [PDF]
At an extracellular pH of 6.6, a peptide (resact) isolated from the egg jelly of Arbacia punctulata increased the respiration rates of A. punctulata spermatozoa but did not activate sperm cells from Lytechinus pictus. In contrast, speract (Gly-Phe-Asp-Leu-Asn-Gly-Gly-Gly-Val-Gly), elevated the respiration rates of L. pictus but not A.

Probing Microbial Extracellular Respiration Ability Using Riboflavin
Analytical Chemistry, 2020Electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) are capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET) to insoluble metal oxides, and thus play a great role in the fields of environment, energy, and geosciences. However, rapid and accurate quantification of the EET ability of EAB is still challenging.

Biohydrogen productions from xylose and glucose under dark condition were enhanced by the presence of natural Fe3O4. The electron equivalent of H2 fractions accounted for 4.55 % and 5.69 % of the total given xylose and glucose in the experiments without Fe3O4, and that were correspondingly increased to 5.14 % and 6.50 % in the experiments with 100 mg/L

Abstract Extracellular electron transfer (EET) empowers electrogens to catalyse the bioconversion of a wide range of xenobiotics in the environment. Synthetic bioengineering has proven effective in promoting EET output. However, conventional strategies mainly focus on modifications of EET‐related genes or pathways,

Extracellular cations and respiration of tissues of Holothuria glaberrima
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1981Abstract 1. 1. Respiratory tree and muscle of Holothuria glaberrima respire at a rate of 635.5 ± 10 μ l O 2 /hr × g d.w. and 137.4 ± 6.3 μ l O 2 /hr × g d.w. respectively in sodium-containing artificial seawater. 2. 2. Replacement of sodium by choline, lithium or Tris (pH 8.0) does not modify oxygen consumption of respiratory trees.

The roles of medullary extracellular and cerebrospinal fluid pH in control of respiration
Respiration Physiology, 1985To determine the effective stimulus to the central chemoreceptors, we measured CSF and medullary extracellular fluid (ECF) pH and phrenic activity in 11 anesthetized, paralyzed, vagotomized and glomectomized cats. Flat-tipped pH electrodes (2 mm diam.) were used to measure ECF pH on the ventral surface of the medulla and CSF pH 2 mm above the surface ...

Potential regulates metabolism and extracellular respiration of electroactive Geobacter biofilm
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2019AbstractDissimilatory metal reducer Geobacter sulfurreducens can mediate redox processes through extracellular electron transfer and exhibit potential‐dependent electrochemical activity in biofilm. Understanding the microbial acclimation to potential is of critical importance for developing robust electrochemically active biofilms and facilitating ...
