Profiling neoadjuvant therapy response in rectal cancer using meta‐analysis of publicly available transcriptomic RNA‐seq datasets

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study integrates publicly available transcriptomic datasets to identify molecular signatures associated with response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer. By analyzing a combination of multiple cohorts with bioinformatics approaches, we reveal biological pathways and immune‐related features that may improve ...

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cardiac MRI T1 and ECV Measurements in Pre-Heart Failure Populations

open access: yesHearts
Background/Objectives: Heart failure (HF) often develops from a prolonged asymptomatic phase where early detection could prevent progression. Pre-heart failure (pre-HF) populations—those with risk factors (Stage A) or subclinical myocardial changes ...

An ex vivo model of interactions between extracellular vesicles and peripheral mononuclear blood cells in whole blood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) can be loaded with therapeutic cargo and engineered for retention by specific body sites; therefore, they have great potential for targeted delivery of biomolecules to treat diseases.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Extracellular Volume Fraction Analysis on Cardiac Computed Tomography Is Useful for Predicting the Prognosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease
Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) analysis on computed tomography (CT) is now available. The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of CT-derived ECV analysis for predicting outcomes in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Extracellular vesicles from microalgae

open access: yes, 2021
The invention relates to extracellular vesicles derived from native, photosynthetic, non-fermenting microalgae, to a method of isolating extracellular vesicles from native, photosynthetic, non-fermenting microalgae by growth, centrifugation and ...

Effect of cytostatic drug presence on extracellular polymeric substances formation in municipal wastewater treated by membrane bioreactor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The effect of the cyclophosphamide and its mean metabolites on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) formation was investigated. Two lab-scale membrane bioreactors were followed in parallel (one with the cytostatic drugs, the second without ...

Hydrostatic pressure activates HIF‐1α via β‐catenin to promote stemness in breast cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
To mimic the elevated intestinal fluid pressure in breast cancers, we loaded human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7, MDA‐MB‐453, and BT‐474) to 50 mmHg hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure exposure upregulated HIF‐1α and induced stemness in MCF‐7 and BT‐474 cells.

Development and Validation of Imaging‐Free Myocardial Fibrosis Prediction Models, Association with Outcomes, and Sample Size Estimation for Phase 3 Trials

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background Phase 3 trials testing whether pharmacologic interventions targeting myocardial fibrosis improve outcomes require myocardial fibrosis measurement that does not rely on tomographic imaging with intravenous contrast.
