Conducting Eye‐Tracking Research in Acute Care: A Scoping Review of Ethical, Feasibility and Acceptability Challenges

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Nursing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To identify and synthesise the ethical, feasibility and acceptability challenges associated with implementing eye‐tracking research with clinicians in acute care settings and to explore strategies to address these concerns. Design Scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology.

Volatile organic compound profiles in outlet air from extracorporeal life-support devices differ from breath profiles in critically ill patients

open access: yesERJ Open Research, 2019
Introduction It is highly uncertain whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath of critically ill intensive care unit patients are formed in the lung locally, in the air compartment or lung tissue, or elsewhere in the body and transported

Respiratory Viruses at Time of Lung Transplant and the Relationship to Primary Graft Dysfunction

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, EarlyView.
Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a form of severe and immediate post‐transplant lung injury that can lead to death. In our cohort of 229 patients undergoing lung transplantation with protocolized day 1 bronchoscopy specimens sent for respiratory viruses (RVs), RV+ status was not associated with an adjusted difference in the risk of PGD.

Degree of risk related to procedures performed in conjunction with surgical myocardial revascularization in octogenarians

open access: yesClinics, 2009
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: We determined the degree of risk produced by the association of other surgical procedures with surgical myocardial revascularization in octogenarian patients and identified the risk factors that best explain hospital mortality ...

Oxidative stress during extracorporeal circulation.

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, 2014
There is an increased oxidative stress response in patients having cardiac surgery, haemodialysis or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation that is related to poorer outcomes and increased mortality.

Novel method for autologous peripheral blood stem cell harvest using highly concentrated sodium citrate solution replacing acid citrate dextrose solution A

open access: yesTransfusion, EarlyView.
Abstract Background As the processed blood volume increases, a larger amount of anticoagulant (AC) is required, which leads to a serious issue of fluid dilution in large‐volume leukocytapheresis (defined as ≥3‐fold total blood volume). We previously reported a novel method for allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell harvest (PBSCH) using highly ...

Extracorporeal Circulation Causes Release of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL)

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 1999
Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) used during cardiac surgery causes activation of several inflammatory systems. These events are not fully understood but are responsible for complications during the immediate postoperative period.

Split red blood cell units contain defined extracellular K+ levels, which are improved by a washing procedure

open access: yesVox Sanguinis, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Objectives We should control free K+ during massive transfusion (>80 mL/kg) of red blood cells (RBCs) in small children. To manage this, several national and international guidelines recommend using RBCs stored only up to 7 days.
